Clermont, Florida – On day two of the Oberlin College softball team's spring break trip, the team faced both Manchester and Union. The Tuesday doubleheader saw Oberlin jump out early but fall short in the final innings of each game. After an 8-3 loss against Manchester, and a 7-3 loss to Union move Oberlin to 2-10 overall.
In game one against Manchester, the Crimson and Gold struck first, beginning with a leadoff single from
Roxie Freifeld to left center. Right after,
Maya Means singled to shortstop putting two on base with no outs. A couple of sacrifice hits later, Freifeld ran through home plate to put the Yeowomen on the board. Means added another score after capitalizing on a Spartans pass ball.
Manchester responded in the top of the fifth with a pair of RBI's on fielder's choice plays. Tied at 2-2, a massive hit from
Ava Soldo brought
Olivia Bey home before she was picked off between second and third base to end the inning. The top of the sixth inning saw Manchester take a resounding 7-3 lead, scoring off a handful of miscues from Oberlin. The Yeowomen were unable to cut into the deficit over the next two half innings, ultimately falling to the Spartans.
After
Hailey Alspach threw a complete game with five strikeouts through 112 pitches,
Sophie Stone started game two against Union. In the rematch from the loss the day prior, Stone dished out a trio of strikeouts through 141 pitches in 5.0 innings. Bey came in for relief in the final inning to record a strikeout and close the game.
In the top of the second inning,
Jess Friedman's hit to the pitcher brought Means to home plate. Minutes later
Leslie Sullivan's infield hit brough Friedman to third, where she advanced home on a pass ball. Union responded to Oberlin's lead with three runs of their own, consistently adding to their score over the next four innings.
Down 7-2, the Crimson and Gold bats rallied, with
Alexis Croatt and Sullivan on base when
Wren Norris stepping up to the plate. The sophomore singled down the left line, giving Sullivan plenty of space to round third and head home. Unfortunately for Oberlin, the momentum stopped there as the next two batters fouled out to shortstop.
The young squad earns a day off before returning to action for another pair of games on Thursday, March 27. The team first plays Luther at 10 a.m., followed by Lawrence at 12:30 p.m.
