Orlando, Florida – Kicking off their spring break tour at The Spring Games in Orlando, Florida, the Oberlin College softball team dropped a pair of games on Monday. Opening their day against Union, the Yeowomen fell 9-3 before dropping a tough game against Willamette, 5-1. The Crimson and Gold sink to 2-8 ahead of their quick turnaround.
Taking the start in the circle,
Hailey Alspach dished out eight strikeouts, just one shy of her season-high of nine.
Oberlin jumped out quick against Union, after Alspach singled to right field in the leadoff slot. After hits from
Roxie Freifeld and
Maya Means, Alspach rounded the bases home to give Oberlin the 1-0 lead.
Union knocked in three runs over the next several innings, but a
Wren Norris single and an error by the Chargers brought
Jess Friedman to home plate. Even at 3-3, the Chargers broke loose in the top of the sixth and seventh to clinch the 9-3 win.
In the team's second game of the day,
Sophie Stone earned the pitching start, collecting seven strikeouts through 6.0 innings.
The Bearcats struck first, but just like in game one, Means singled out to the left center to bring Alspach home and put Oberlin on the board. The Yeowomen looked to strike again with Norris primed on third base. Sprinting to steal home plate, an unlucky bounce put Willamette in perfect position to catch the sophomore.
The Crimson and Gold bats struggled to put together another meaningful run at the lead, while the Bearcats tacked on four more runs to take the game, 5-1.
Oberlin returns to the diamond less than 24 hours later, when they take on Manchester tomorrow, Tuesday, March 25. After the morning match at 10:15 a.m., Oberlin plays look to exact revenge on Union at 12:30 p.m.
