University Heights, Ohio – Putting up a fight after a lopsided first quarter, the Oberlin College women's lacrosse team fell 14-7 to John Carroll on Wednesday evening.
Maddie Weathers and
Emily Berger recorded career days in the match. Weathers tallied seven ground balls and five caused turnovers, while Berger mustered out 17 saves. The Yeowomen fall to 2-4 on the season.
Beside the defensive duo,
Phoebe Dolan caused two turnovers, and
Mary Rodman collected a trio of ground balls. On attack, Dolan dished out an assist and two goals to lead the offense, helped by
Megan Hiller who added another two goals.
Olivia Corradi,
Sophie Ward, and
Lauren Deardorf notched the final three goals for Oberlin.
Put on the hashes after a foul inside the eight, Ward scored the first goal of the game to put the Crimson and Gold up 1-0. However, the Blue Streaks responded in waves with six unanswered goals to cap the quarter. JCU added two more to begin the second period, but it was all Yeowomen who bounced back with three-straight scores.
Down 8-4 at the half, Oberlin saw John Carroll extend their lead to six behind early goals in the first five minutes. The home lead moved to 11-4 just before
Izzy Sunday caused a turnover in the midfield, giving possession to
Maddie Darlington. The rookie settled the ball for the Oberlin offense, where
Larissa Andrick connected with Corradi to end the Yeowomen's drought.
The next score for Oberlin came in the fourth quarter when Dolan won the draw control, and scored on the ensuing, man-up opportunity. Although outscoring John Carroll in the final period, the final goal from Deardorf left the Yeowomen short 14-7.
Oberlin hits the road for their final OAC matchup when they take on the Otterbein Cardinals this Saturday, March 15 at 1 p.m.
