Oberlin, Ohio– Capping off National Girls and Women in Sports Day, the Oberlin College women's basketball team defeated the Wooster Fighting Scots at home on Wednesday night. A 63-41 domination lifts the Yeowomen to 5-4 in the NCAC and 11-9 overall.
Second-year Krystal Montas led the offensive drive with 14 points and two assists. Camille Zinaich finished with 13 points, while Ellie Pollock-Ballard notched ten. The duo combined for six assists.
Defensively, Angela Kumler stole the show with a career-high seven blocks on top of three rebounds and a steal. Zinaich added a team-best eight rebounds and two steals, bolstered by Katherine Csiszar and Lily Najmulski who each accounted for at least five rebounds.
It was neck-and-neck in the first quarter, tying at 15-15 behind a balanced offensive performance from the Crimson and Gold. Nearly every basket was scored by a different player, except for a pair of buckets by Montas.
Pollock-Ballard and Anora Lee opened the second quarter for Oberlin with back-to-back three-pointers. Setting the tone early, the Yeowomen held Wooster scoreless for the last 7:59 of the half to take a 16-point lead into halftime. Oberlin edged out the Fighting Scots 19-3 in the second, capitalizing on 8-17 shooting from the field.
Up 34-18 to start the second half, the Yeowomen continued their early momentum. Oberlin's defense continued to be a problem for the visitors, holding the Scots to 5-14 from the field and extending their lead to 51-32.
Oberlin made quick work of Wooster in the final period of play, outscoring the Fighting Scots 12-9. With the win, Oberlin has now won three of their last four games.
Returning to the court for Club Sports Day, the Crimson and Gold tip-off against DePauw on Saturday, February 8 at 2 p.m. Oberlin will celebrate the campus' vibrant club and intramural sports scene during the match, with games and prizes at halftime.
