Oberlin, Ohio –In their first match against a ranked opponent this season, the Oberlin College women's tennis team lost 7–0 to No. 15 Case Western Reserve University.
After traveling to take on the Spartans, the Yeowomen started out slowly in doubles. Following their close win at No. 2 doubles last week, second-year
Rachel Allen and first-year
Hannah Soong moved up a spot to take on Lily McCloskey and Anna Kan but were unable to grab a game and lost 6–0.
Olivia Wollner partnered with
Scarlett Kingston for her season debut in doubles but the pair met a similar fate to Case's No. 3 team Kareena Sivanesan and Yasemin Bilgin, 6–0. In their first match as a pair,
Freya Rahm and
Eva Lopez performed the best out of any team but were unable to overcome Elsa Syed and Ellior Rose in the No. 2 match and fell 6–3.
It was challenging for Oberlin to chip away at the depth of Case in singles play, as no Yeowoman was able to win more than three games in one set. In the No. 1 singles match, fourth-year
Anna Pastore had her hands full with Laurel Utterback and was overwhelmed in both sets, losing 6–1, 6–2. Allen found slightly more success in her singles match but was unable to make a large impact against Case's No. 2 Katalina Wang, losing 6–1, 6–2. Rahm could grab just one game in the No. 3 match, succumbing 6–1, 6–0 to Katie Wong.
Kingston had the most competitive match of the day in the No. 4 spot against Rose and won 5 games before falling 6–2, 6–3. Lopez came out strong against Maya Brink but couldn't maintain her level in the No. 5 match as she lost 6–2, 6–0. Wollner had a tough battle in the first set but couldn't replicate her effort in the second as she was beaten 6–3, 6–1 by Sara Fernandez.
The Yeowomen will be back in action in one week when they take on the University of Mount Union at noon next Sunday.
