Oberlin, Ohio – Opening their home season in a snowstorm, the Oberlin College women's lacrosse team stomped out Ohio Northern on Wednesday evening. The 21-3 trampling put Oberlin up 20 on the season.
With an incredible six goals and two assists, first-year
Kylie Thompson led the team on the attacking end with eight total points. In just her second game in Crimson and Gold, Thompson ties fourth all-time for points scored in a single game. Furthermore, this is the second-most points a first-year has ever scored in a game.
Aiding her efforts,
Olivia Corradi tallied four goals and an assist to go along with four ground balls and five draw controls.
Izzy Sunday scored her first goals of the season, putting away three plus an assist.
Defensively,
Emily Berger earned the start in cage where she amassed five saves over three quarters.
Mary Rodman tallied four ground balls, while classmate
Rachel Reiter added a pair of caused turnovers on top of three draw controls.
After a slow start to the snowy game, Sunday got Oberlin on the board with woman-up score at the 9:50 mark. Just a minute later,
Megan Hiller notched her first goal, setting Oberlin up for a 4-0 run. Ohio Northern got on the board with 2:25 remaining, but Thompson responded right away.
After Thompson capitalized on a free position opportunity,
Larissa Andrick found
Phoebe Dolan for her third goal of the season. ONU added another in response, but it was all Crimson and Gold who laid on four unanswered goals to end the half.
At 13:25, Sunday caused a turnover before putting the ball in the back of the net to give the Yeowomen the double-digit lead. Now with a mercy clock, Oberlin ran away with the game and outscored the Polar Bears 5-0 in the third quarter.
Janny McCormick began the final quarter in cage, where she totalled a pair of stops.
Charlie Marshall and
Elle Lavin set the tone for the fourth period, with back-to-back goals less than two minutes apart.
Maddie Darlington got in on the action with free position score, before Thompson and Corradi closed out the game with quick goals in the final minutes.
"I'm really proud of the team battling through another day with brumal elements." Head Coach
Malory Nadrah continues, "We executed the game plan and truly played as a team all over the field. [It's] a fantastic team win!"
The Yeowomen return to the road for their next content when they head across the interstate to Baldwin Wallace on Wednesday, February 26. The Crimson and Gold and the Yellow Jackets face off at 6 p.m.
