Yeowomen Trounce Transylvania in Season Opener

Lexington, Kentucky – Kicking off a highly-anticipated season, the Oberlin College women's lacrosse team clinched a statement 20-10 victory over Transylvania on Saturday afternoon. The Yeowomen move to a perfect 1-0 in the Malory Nadrah era.

The squad's you proved to be the difference maker in the matchup, led by rookie attacker Kylie Thompson with a team-best four goals, and four ground balls. Classmate Sophie Ward chipped in a hat-trick of her own in addition to another four ground balls and two draw controls.

Marking her sophomore campaign with a start in cage, Emily Berger made a trio of saves. Alongside her on the backline, Maddie Weathers and Rachel Reiter clammed down on defense to stifle the Pioneers.

Junior captain Olivia Corradi led the circle team with five draw controls to compliment her three goals and an assist. Fellow third-year Megan Hiller also added a trio of goals and an assist, while going 1-1 from the free position.

After conceding the first goal of the game, it was nine unanswered goals from the Crimson and Gold featuring seven unique players. Corradi notched the season's first goal for the Yeowomen, quickly followed by Phoebe Dolan who cashed in off a pass from Larissa Andrick. Alexis Escobedo, and Elle Lavin also got in on the scoring action, driving the ball into the back of the net unassisted.

Up by eight, Corradi extended the lead to 10-1 with a goal in the first :56 of the second quarter. Transylvania regained their standing to begin chipping away at the Crimson and Gold's lead, but it was far too little to contain the fiery offense. On Mary Rodman's first career goal, the Yeowomen went up ten to start the running clock ahead of halftime.

The team got off to a slower start in the third, only scoring a pair of goals behind crafty footwork from Andrick and Madeline Darlington. Thompson's goal to start the fourth gave the Crimson and Gold their largest lead of the game at eleven. Transylvania could only match, not beat, the Yeowomen in the final period of action. With three goals on either side of the ball, Oberlin held onto the double-digit lead to start their season on the right side of the win column.

"We played and fought together." Head Coach Nadrah reflects on her team's efforts in their 2025 debut, "I am really proud of the team for bringing the energy and intensity in tough game conditions. They started the game equipped to put it away in the first quarter, and it's a really great way to start our season!"

The win marks the first time Oberlin has won their season opener since 2022, and the largest season opening win since the team defeated Heidelberg 17-2 on March 1, 2017. Oberlin will return home for their next game on Wednesday, February 19. The home opener is slated to begin at 6 p.m.
