Oberlin, Ohio – Celebrating their two seniors,
Kendal McCall and
Camille Zinaich, the Oberlin College women's basketball team hosted Wittenberg on Saturday afternoon. Although a hot start saw the Crimson and Gold on top at the half, the Yeowomen fell behind for a 72-55 final. The Yeowomen move to 12-11 and 6-6 in the NCAC.
Leading the festive day's charge, Zinaich put up 19 points and five rebounds.
Ellie Pollock-Ballard knocked down a pair of three-pointers to finish with eight points and two steals. The defense was led by
Angela Kumler, who grabbed 11 rebounds, ten coming on defense.
Krystal Montas pulled in six, while adding another two blocks.
The Crimson and Gold came out hot in the opened quarter, outscoring the Tigers 13-7. Oberlin held Wittenberg to just 3-17 from the field, while cashing in a 7-2 run to close the period. Montas opened the second quarter with a layup in the paint just before Pollock-Ballard pushed Oberlin's lead to 17-9 with a bucket at 7:43.
After forcing a turnover, the Tigers evened the score at 20-20 with 3:15 remaining.
Anora Lee knocked down a triple in response, followed by a triple combo from Zinaich to take a 29-24 lead at half.
With the Tigers on their heels, Oberlin held their lead until a three-piece from Karsen Karlblom put Wittenberg over the edge at 38-37. Even with the back-and-forth that ensued, the Yeowomen sat behind at 43-40 heading into the final period.
Besides a long bucket form Zinaich, it was all Wittenberg through the first five minutes of the fourth quarter. Two baskets from
Gabby Peña-Hilzen dulled the blow, but the Tigers found themselves up double-digits on Oberlin. The Tigers kept the pressure on through the final whistle to clinch the conference victory.
Oberlin returns next week for one final home this regular season. Hosting the Hiram Terriers, the Yeowomen are set to tip off on Wednesday, February 19, at 6 p.m.
