Oberlin, Ohio – Knocking off Wittenberg for just the ninth time in their 90-year history, the Oberlin College men's basketball team took down the Tigers on Saturday evening. After sending their seniors off with a win, the Yeomen improve to 12-11 on the season and 4-10 in NCAC action.
Yuuki Okubo shined in his final game in his senior celebration, leading the team with 17 points, three steals, and six rebounds.
JJ Gray also tallied 17 points, while balancing the stat sheet out with five rebounds and four assists.
Andrew Gannon pulled in a team-best eight rebounds on top of his seven points, while
Will Bousquette III grabbed five rebounds, all defensive. Rounding out the senior class,
Asaan Snipes-Rea recorded nearly every stat, two points, a rebound, an assists, and a steal.
After fall behind 6-2 early in the game, the Yeomen jumped out to tie the game. At six-all, it was an onslaught of point-for-point action, culminating in jumper from Gay to give Oberlin their first lead of the game. The 23-21 advantage only lasted for a few seconds before the Tigers found the equalizer in the paint. Gray added the last four points for Oberlin as they left for the locker room tied at 27-27.
Milun Micanovic put Oberlin on top to start the second half, after Gannon pulled in an offensive rebound to maintain Crimson and Gold possession. In the ensuing play, the tall center pulled back for a three-pointer to launch a train of triples.
Zach Smith and Gannon hit from behind the arc in back-to-back possessions, but it was only just enough to stay ahead of the aggressive Wittenberg offense. Once tied at 42-42, the game lulled again until 7:12 when Bousquette III got the crowd on their feet with his first three-pointer.
Gray capitalized on the momentum, to put Oberlin up 56-48 with just five minutes remaining. Locking down on defense, the Yeomen held Wittenberg to just one shot from the field thereafter, clinching the senior day victory.
Oberlin returns to the court on Wednesday, February 19, when they host Kenyon for their final game in Philips Gymnasium. The night cap is set to tip off at 8 p.m.
