Basketball Battles Claremont-Mudd-Scripps in David Wells Classic

Claremont, California - Traveling to the west coast to compete in the two-day David Wells Classic, the Oberlin College women's basketball team took on Claremont-Mudd-Scripps. Despite an 18-point push in the final quarter, the Crimson and Gold fell 62-44 to the Athenas.

Krystal Montas led the scoring effort for Oberlin, tallying 11 points while Ellie Pollock-Ballard trailed with nine. Taking charge of the rebound effort, Angela Kumler produced five boards while Montas and Lily Najmulski added four each.

On the defensive end, Kumler paced the Crimson and Gold with four steals while Katherine Csiszar and Gabby Peña-Hilzen recorded three apiece. Csiszar and Montas also performed well under the net with a pair of blocks each.

Opening scoring action after the tip-off, Montas posted a jumper after a pass from Najmulski. The Athenas matched Oberlin's quick start with a layup on the next possession before Najmulski sank a long-range shot to regain their edge. Tied again at 5-5, Anora Lee delivered a fastbreak shot from behind the arc followed by a Csiszar layup, extending the Crimson and Gold advantage to 10-5. With 5:34 remaining in the opening frame, CMS slowly cut their margin until a fastbreak three-pointer with 1:37 remaining clinched a slight 13-11 lead for the Athenas going into the second period.

A seven-point run in the second half carried Claremont-Mudd-Scripps to a comfortable 20-13 advantage. Forcing Oberlin to dish out a strong defense, CMS began to pull away entering halftime with a 27-18 lead.

Returning from the break with an aggressive offense, Oberlin battled to hold off the Athenas. A pair of three-pointers from Pollock-Ballard hoped to cut the deficit for the Yeowomen, but a 24-point quarter from CMS secured a sizable edge leading into the final session.

Five Obies contributed to the high-scoring surge for the Crimson and Gold during the final period, highlighted by long-range shots from Montas, Pollock-Ballard, and Noa Brown. Despite the strong offensive push, CMS capitalized on their third-point rally to secure the 62-44 victory.

Oberlin will return to the court tomorrow, Saturday, November 29 for the second day of the David Wells Classic. Tip-off is scheduled for 6 p.m. ET.
