Granville, Ohio – The Oberlin College football team traveled south for a North Coast tussle with the Denison Big Red on Saturday afternoon.
Quarterback
Drew Nye had a stellar day, throwing 218 yards and notching a touchdown. His top target,
Miguel Garcia Garcia, tallied a career-high 102 yards on seven receptions. Following the rookie,
Jacob Day (34),
Connor Steele (31), and
JJ Racz (30) all had big days.
Ramzey Lewis led the defense with nine solo tackles, including one tackle for loss. Following him,
Hunter Green added another five solo tackles and three assists, and 1.5 tackles for a loss of six yards.
Andrew Foley and
Ako Taylor II each broke up a pass in the air raid, while
Judah Moenoa recorded a QB hurry of his own.
After a quiet first quarter that featured the Crimson and Gold defense holding the Big Red to just seven points, Oberlin's offense found its rhythm. Midway through the second quarter, the Yeomen began their drive at their own 27-yard line. On 2nd and 10, Nye found Garcia Garcia for a nine-yard pass. The rookie wide receiver ran another 55 yards after the catch to set the Yeomen up, 1st and goal at the seven-yard line.
Unable to find the endzone,
Cameron Lytle lined up for a 33-yard field goal attempt. Kicking the ball right through the uprights, Oberlin earned three points for the explosive effort.
The momentum carried over into Oberlin's ensuing drive, resulting in a 31-yard touchdown pass from Nye to Steele. Beginning at Oberlin's own 20-yard line, Garcia Garcia and Day made double-digit plays to move the Yeomen down the field.
Another 13-yard pickup from Garcia Garcia put the Yeomen 1st and 10 on Denison's 41-yard line. Day caught Nye's next pass for another ten yards. On the final play, Steele caught a deep ball from Nye in the Big Red endzone for the score.
Oberlin shakes off the 62-9 loss when they return home for their final game on Bailey Field this year. Hosting Wabash (RV), Oberlin celebrates their seniors prior to the 12 p.m. kickoff.
