Volleyball Takes Denison to Four in Home Finale

Oberlin, Ohio – Hosting their final home match of the regular season, the Oberlin College volleyball team played a tight match against rival Denison. After winning the third set to force a fourth, Oberlin came up on the wrong end of a 3-1 (25-22, 25-20, 21-25, 25-23) scoreline.

Oberlin saw stellar offensive performances from a trio of players, led by senior Zeynep Kaya, who tallied 16.0 points on 13 kills, two aces, and a block. First-year duo Brylie Peters and Mara Geiger both tallied double-digit points. Peters added ten kills and one ace, while Geiger added seven kills and four aces.

At the forefront of the dominant serve game, Jillian Jendsen added a near-career-high five aces in the match. Additionally, the senior accounted for 22 assists and four kills. Genna Gauthier played a supportive role in the passing game with 12 assists and a pair of digs.

Defensively, Kaya led the team in digs with ten, while Iris Archibald pulled out nine. Alira Allen was stellar at the net with a solo block and a block assist, followed by Evelyn Welton, Gauthier, and Kaya with blocks as well.

After jumping out to a 4-0 lead in the first set, Oberlin saw Denison crawl back into the set. Tied at 21-21, the Big Red closed the first frame with a 4-1 run. The momentum carried into the second set with a steady climb to a 10-6 lead. Jendsen broke open the set with four-straight aces to give Oberlin the lead and a 12-10 advantage. The Big Red responded with an 11-2 run to seal another set.

Facing a decisive set, Oberlin rallied behind each other to go toe-to-toe with the visitors. Midway through the frame, the Crimson and Gold began their own 7-2 run after Geiger recorded a kill and consecutive aces. Up 21-17, the Yeowomen cruised to a third-set victory.

Denison jumped to a 7-3 lead to begin the fourth and continued to add to their score at 12-4. Oberlin's resiliency shone through, however, and the Yeowomen capitalized on Denison's errors to bring the game within two. Geiger's serving led the team to another seven-straight points as Oberlin grabbed a 19-16 advantage. The Big Red battled the Oberlin storm to get back in the match and seal the game at 25-23.

Oberlin hits the road for their final three matches, beginning with a trip to Ohio Wesleyan on Saturday, November 1. First serve is set to go up at 1 p.m.
