Oberlin Takes Allegheny to 2OT on Senior Day

Oberlin, Ohio - Celebrating their two seniors, Elly Scheer and Janny McCormick, the Oberlin College field hockey team hosted North Coast opponent Allegheny in a gritty double-overtime evening match.

Appearing between the pipes for all 60 minutes of regulation and for the entire duration of both overtime periods, McCormick registered a season-high 12 saves.

Junior Bella Tilford opened offensive action for the Crimson and Gold at 6:42 in the opening period but was stopped by the Gators' goalkeeper. Both teams kept each other out of the circle for much of the frame until Tilford's shot went wide with 15 seconds on the clock.

Following a trio of Allegheny corners, McCormick's quick reactions kept each shot from hitting the board to keep the opponents at bay. Hoping to enter the break with the edge, Scheer sent a shot at 29:44 but was denied by the Allegheny keeper.

The Gators opened scoring action nearly five minutes into the second half after sending a shot above McCormick. The Oberlin defense pushed to keep Allegheny from doubling their lead until Mary Rodman and Clare Kammeier connected to score the equalizer. Battling through the connected Gators' defense, Rodman drilled the ball past the keeper, allowing Kammeier to notch the final tip-in.

Both teams elevated their defensive pressure in the fourth session, as neither team recorded a shot until three minutes remaining in regulation when Rodman's shot was blocked by an Allegheny defender. With just over 30 seconds remaining in the period, Tilford sent a shot on target, but the Gators' keeper prevented the junior from converting. Securing a corner with just three seconds to go, Oberlin was unable to find an opening for a shot, leading to their first overtime period.

Tilford continued to put pressure on the opponents in the first overtime period, delivering a trio of shots paired with a shot from Rodman. With nearly one minute remaining, Allegheny sent a quintet of shots as McCormick dove from one side of the cage to the other to keep all five attempts out of the goal.

Early in the second overtime period, the Gators posted a trio of shots, all stopped by McCormick. Following a wide shot from Tilford, Allegheny's Caroline Smith connected with Jamie Marchewka to clinch the golden-goal victory.

The Crimson and Gold will host North Coast opponent Ohio Wesleyan on Saturday, November 1, for their final match of the regular season. The game is scheduled to start at 12 p.m.
