Berea, Ohio - Traveling to Baldwin Wallace for a midweek matchup, the Oberlin College volleyball team fell in straight sets to the Yellowjackets.
Leading the offensive efforts for the Crimson and Gold, first-year
Brylie Peters tallied 12 kills (hitting .345) and 11 digs, marking her fifth double-double of the season. Senior
Zeynep Kaya finished the evening with eight kills from 17 swings to produce a .294 hitting percentage.
Splitting setting duties, the duo of senior
Jillian Jendsen and sophomore
Genna Gauthier recorded 16 and 10 assists, respectively. Performing well from the backline, senior
Iris Archibald added eight digs while senior
Josie Macdonald and Jendsen notched seven apiece.
Baldwin Wallace jumped out to a 5-0 lead to open the match and capitalized off that early momentum. Holding a slight edge at 9-6, the Yellowjackets registered a second five-point run to extend their lead to 14-6. Trailing at 20-10, Oberlin delivered the next four points highlighted by a kill from Peters and an ace from Archibald, but Baldwin Wallace pulled away to clinch the first set.
Shifting gears to begin the second session, Jendsen posted back-to-back aces to set the tone for the Crimson and Gold. The Yellowjackets responded with back-to-back kills but were met with a five-point Oberlin rally capped off by a service ace from first-year
Mara Geiger. Holding a slight deficit at 11-9, Baldwin Wallace recorded six of the next seven points to claim the lead. The Yeowomen pushed to tie the opponents at 18-18, but the Yellowjackets administered their best offensive performance of the match to claim the set.
Hitting their best of the night (.351), Oberlin kept Baldwin Wallace within striking distance and hoped to force a fourth set. Despite the Crimson and Gold's final eight points resulting from six kills and a pair of aces, the Yellowjackets secured the third set with a narrow 25-22 victory to clinch the sweep.
Oberlin will travel to new North Coast member John Carroll on Saturday, October 18. The weekend match is slated to begin at 1 p.m.
