Oberlin, Ohio – Hosting the tenth-ranked team in the nation, the Oberlin College women's basketball team took on Ohio Wesleyan in their return to Philips Gym. Falling to a dominant Bishops team, the Yeowomen settled for an 83-44 final on Saturday afternoon. Moving to 7-6 overall, Oberlin will look to reset when they travel to DePauw next week.
Fighting against a staunch OWU defense,
Krystal Montas led the Yeowomen with ten points in addition to three rebounds and a pair of blocks.
Gabby Peña-Hilzen finished next with seven points, while
Angela Kumler,
Camille Zinaich, and
Kendal McCall all put up six points. Kumler and Zinaich split rebounding duties with four apiece, while Kumler dished out five assists.
Ohio Wesleyan controlled the game from the start, notching a quick layup to take the game's first lead. Although Oberlin tried to keep it close with a triple at the buzzer, the Yeowomen fell behind 23-12 after the first quarter.
Montas opened the second quarter with a layup in the paint, cutting the Battling Bishops' lead to nine. Minutes later,
Ellie Pollock-Ballard knocked down her first points, hitting a triple keep Oberlin within striking distance. After a slew of poorly timed turnovers and Oberlin miscues, the Yeowomen at a 41-24 disadvantage at halftime.
Pollock-Ballard and
Katherine Csiszar swapped buckets to start the third quarter, as the Crimson and Gold slowly looked to cut into Ohio Wesleyan's lead. After an 11-0 run, OWU looked automatic at the beginning of the fourth. Unable to mount a comeback, the Yeowomen finished the game on a high note, scoring the most points (13) of any quarter, and shooting 57% from the field.
With their calendars already set for a rematch against OWU, Oberlin now turns their sights to the defending conference champions, the DePauw Tigers for their next matchup. The Yeowomen travel out to Greencastle, IN on Saturday, January 11 for a 3 p.m. tip off.
