Greencastle, Indiana – After a high-powered first half, the Oberlin College women's basketball team struggled against the DePauw Tigers on the road. Upended 67-57, the Yeowomen even out at 7-7 overall and 1-2 in the NCAC.
Angela Kumler and
Ellie Pollock-Ballard paced Oberlin's offense as the duo each scored 15 points while combing for four assists and five rebounds. Pollock-Ballard ties her career-best for three-pointers after finished 5-8 from the arc.
Camille Zinaich finished with a balanced stat line at ten points, five rebounds, and five assists.
Defensively,
Gabby Peña-Hilzen led the team with seven rebounds marking a new career-best for the rookie.
Lily Najmulski added to the effort with six reobounds, in addition to her three assists and a steal.
A fiery start to the game, Oberlin scored the first 12 points of the game highlighted by a pair of triples from Pollock-Ballard. The home team finally got on the board when Ava Hassel hit a three-pointer at the 7:06 mark, but the Yeowomen maintained a three-score lead with a jumper from
Anora Lee. The Tigers eventually found their rhythm and tied the game at 16-16 at the end of the first quarter.
Returning to the court in the second quarter, the Yeowomen shot 5-9 from behind the arc while holding the Tigers to just one three-pointer. Peña-Hilzen and Pollock-Ballard each hit long shots in the first three minutes of the second period, but it was Pollock-Ballard connecting for her fourth triple that put Oberlin ahead 30-21. While the Tigers battled to stay within reach, the Yeomen looked automatic from the field and a
Krystal Montas three-pointer at the buzzer capped 26-point quarter for the Crimson and Gold.
It was a night and day difference coming into the second half, after Pollock-Ballard hit her fifth shot from long, Oberlin scored just six more points the remainder of the third period. For the home team, the Tigers came out of the locker room reenergized and claimed a 53-51 lead before the final quarter.
A layup from Najmulski tied the game to start the fourth, but DePauw put on a 9-0 run to keep Oberlin at bay. Back-to-back bucket from Kumler broke up the momentum, but he Tigers were too far gone and clinched the win on a three-pointer from Moira McGinley.
Oberlin comes home for their next matchup, hosting Denison on Wednesday, January 15 for a late tip off at 6 p.m.
