Hiram, Ohio – Clinching victory after a fourth quarter push, the Oberlin College women's basketball team defeated Hiram, 69-67, on Wednesday night. The Yeowomen improve to 9-8 on the season and run even in the NCAC at 3-3.
Senior leader
Camille Zinaich led the team with 18 points. Zinaich added another xix assists and three steals.
Krystal Montas had a balanced performance with 11 points, eight rebounds, and three blocks. Also finishing in double-digits was
Angela Kumler with ten points and dished out a team-high seven assists.
The conference foes got off to a quick start, scoring a combined 44 points in the opening quarter. The Yeowomen shot 9-15 from the field, highlighted by a lone three-pointer from
Ellie Pollock-Ballard. Katherine Czsisar led the charge with six points as Oberlin faced a 25-19 deficit at the end of the quarter.
The Crimson and Gold picked up the pace in the second, outscoring the Terriers 20-14, shooting 2-5 from behind the arc. Behind a pair of free-throws from Zinaich in the final minute, the Yeowomen tied the game at 39-39 at halftime.
Zinaich opened the second half with a layup after an errant turnover by Hiram. After a run by the Terries,
Gabby Peña-Hilzen brought the momentum back with a three-pointer at 1:20. Hitting a jumper at the buzzer, Hiram regained their lead just in time for the final period of action.
The home team scored a triple to start the fourth, but the Yeowomen responded in force, outscoring Hiram 13-6 thereafter. Zinaich's signature step-back with :48 remaining clinched the victory for the Crimson and Gold. Najmulski added an insurance point from the charity stripe in the final second of the match to give Oberlin a much-needed conference win.
Oberlin returns home for their next match against Kenyon on Saturday, January 25. The Owls and the Yeowomen tip off at 1 p.m.
