Oberlin, Ohio – Hosting their conference foe for a midweek matchup, the Oberlin College women's basketball team took down Denison 77-70 on Wednesday night. Improving to 2-2 in the NCAC, the Yeowomen put their overall record above even at 8-7.
With an incredible performance,
Camille Zinaich led the Crimson and Gold with 15 points and a career-high 17 rebounds. The senior notches a double-double in the victory, moving her career total to 22.
Angela Kumler led the scoring attack with 23 points, four rebounds, four steals, and two assists.
Krystal Montas joined in on defense with eight rebounds and tied her career-high six steals. The sophomore added an additional six points to her performance.
It was total domination by Oberlin in the first few minutes of the game, led by a three-pointer from
Lily Najmulski; the Yeowomen put themselves up 9-0. Denison stormed back, but Najmulski stayed hot with another triple to maintain the nine-point lead. Oberlin outscored the Big Red 23-15 in the opening quarter, with half of their shots coming from behind the arc.
The Crimson and Gold maintained their momentum headed into the second period with another lopsided run. Holding Denison scoreless for over five minutes, Oberlin capitalized with 11 unanswered points until Abby Cooch broke the drought with a three-pointer at the 4:53 mark. Denison responded with an incredible five consecutive three-pointers, storming their way back into contention. Even with the dominant final minute, the Yeowomen walked into the locker room up 41-30.
Denison's tied-turning performance carried over into the third, where they flipped the script with an early run of their own. Nine straight points saw Oberlin's advantage erased, calling for the Yeowomen to reset and attack.
Gabby Peña-Hilzen drilled a triple to regain Oberlin's lead, but it was all Denison in the final minute to take a 52-48 lead into the fourth.
Looking for a rally, Peña-Hilzen put the Yeowomen on the board with a jumper to start, followed by a three-point-play from Kumler. Swapping points over the next few minutes, the Crimson and Gold broke free on a 6-0 run with 1:13 remaining. Although the Big Red responded point-for-point, Oberlin never faltered and carried their lead into the final second for victory.
The Yeowomen hit the road for their next match against Wittenberg this Saturday, January 18. Tip-off against the Tigers is set for 2:00 p.m.
