Gambier, Ohio - The Oberlin College volleyball team opened up North Coast Athletic Conference play on Saturday afternoon, falling in straight sets at Kenyon College by the scores of 25-21, 25-18, and 25-21.
The Yeowomen used a diverse offensive attack with
Cami Sweet leading the way with six kills, while
Julia Hall,
Zeynep Kaya, and
Evelyn Welton each finished with five.
Iris Archibald led the back row with 17 digs, while Kaya and
Jillian Jendsen added 12 and 10, respectively.
The first set was a seesaw affair with Oberlin quickly falling behind 3-0 before rattling off seven straight points that that featured a pair of kills from Hall. The Owls would refind their rhythm, tying the frame at 16-16. It was later level at 18-all but the Owls ripped off a mini 4-0 spurt to create enough separation to pull away for the early match advantage.
The Yeowomen got off to a slow start in the second set as the Owls built up a 17-8 lead but Oberlin kept fighting to crawl back to within 20-17 but it was too little too late.
Looking to extend the match with a third-set victory, Oberlin led 10-8 but the Owls came soaring back to take control of the session and finish off the sweep.
Oberlin hit .045 for the match with 25 kills against 16 errors, while the Owls had a success rate of .145 with 34 kills and 17 miscues. Kenyon also ended with an 8-3 advantage on service aces.
The loss dropped Oberlin back to 2-10 overall and 0-1 in the NCAC while Kenyon moved to 7-11 and 1-0 in league play.
Oberlin returns home to host Case Western Reserve on Wednesday at 7 p.m.
