Oberlin, Ohio - The Oberlin College women's soccer team honored its seven seniors prior to kickoff and the fun never stopped from there as the Yeowomen cruised to a commanding 3-0 victory over the Marietta College Pioneers in front of a large homecoming crowd.
Oberlin controlled the bulk of the possession throughout the 90-minute affair, scoring multiple goals for the fourth time this season, which have all been Oberlin wins.
It was senior
Heather Benway who struck first in the 35th minute as she took a long through-ball from classmate
Sophia Timm-Blow and then beat Marietta keeper Sarah Legg in a one-on-one situation. It was Benway's fifth tally of the season and 28th of her career. The score also ran her career points total to 73 and puts her in a tie for third all-time program history with Sam Schongalla (2003-06).
Despite some promising chances, the Yeowomen settled for just a 1-0 cushion at the intermission. However, shortly following the restart, Timm-Blow got into the mix and deposited her fourth score of the year in the 53rd minute.
Oberlin would leave no doubt in the eventual outcome as sophomore
Norah Mosley added an insurance tally in the 70th minute when a corner kick cross from the far side found her feet on the backside post and she promptly ripped a left-footed strike that hit off a Marietta defender and into the goal. The score was the second of the year for the Robbinsville, New Jersey, native.
Ali Grant went the distance between the pipes, making five saves, including a pair of diving stops down the stretch to preserve the clean sheet victory.
Oberlin finished with a 15-8 shot advantage, including a slim 6-5 edge in shots on goal. OC also earned five corners compared to Marietta's one.
The win leveled Oberlin's record to 4-4-1 on the year with nothing but North Coast Athletic Conference games ahead. The NCAC slate will commence next Saturday at Hiram College with the first touch set for 1 p.m.
