Gambier, Ohio – The Oberlin College men's tennis team grabbed 16 victories over the weekend when they competed at the Kenyon Invitational.
In singles play on Saturday, newcomer
Rowan Ing paced the Yeowomen with a 2-0 performance. The rookie defeated William Howell of Centre 0-6, 6-0, 10-6, before taking down P. Garland-Sutter 3-6, 6-3, 10-8. Fellow first-years
Enrique Margain (7-5, 1-0r vs. Allegheny2),
Oliver Faranda (6-1, 6-2 vs. Centre), and
Oliver Knijnenburg (6-1, 6-3 vs. Otterbein) also grabbed wins in the invite.
Capping off a successful first day,
Shawn Lisann defeated Allegheny's Levente Mihaly 7-5, 6-1 before
Zain Makada won 7-6, 6-4 against his Centre opponent.
The Yeomen were able to secure one victory in doubles play, however, three of the four other matches were lost within one to two games. Veteran duo Lisann and Makada claimed the sole win over Denison's Kyle Patrick and Archie Turner 7-6.
Tory Johansson and Ing came close to victory with a 7-6 loss to Allegheny's Reid Stasolla and P. Garland-Sutter.
On day two of singles action, Makada (2-6, 7-5, 10-6) and Margain (2-6, 6-3, 13-11) picked up early wins to add to their success.
Tory Johansson grabbed his first win of the weekend when he took down Otterbein's Coltan Stamper 6-1, 6-0.
Ben Tichauer and
Oliver Faranda had a perfect day in the doubles court, going 2-0 after defeating Center (7-5) and Allegheny (6-1). Lisann and Makada added to their win column with a 6-4 victory over Jett Anderson and Jasper Gazzo of Centre.
Max Brose picked up his first win of the weekend with partner Margain in a 6-3 victory over Allegheny. Johansson and Ing rounded out the weekend's competition with another win against Otterbein, 6-1.
Oberlin takes a two-week hiatus before returning to the court when they host their home opener against Allegheny on Saturday, October 5. The Yeomen and the Gators are set to begin at 4 p.m.
