OBERLIN, OH – Putting away the most goals in game since 2017, the Oberlin College women's soccer team dominated Olivet 7-0 at home. Behind the Saturday lid-lifter, The Yeowomen even out their record at 3-3-1 with more non-conference games on the slate.
Ten different athletes scored points in the match, led by seniors
Heather Benway with two goals and an assist, and
Sophia Timm-Blow with a goal and an assist. Boasting their first shutout of the season,
Ali Grant and
Roam Redington split time in cage for the Crimson and Gold.
It took no time at all for the Yeowomen to get on the board, putting their first goal away just 1:49 into the match. Crossing the field from
Zoe Garver to
Heather Benway to
Sophia Timm-Blow, the senior midfielder scorched her defense before sending the long ball to the back of the cage.
Up a goal, Oberlin continued their hot start with another goal at the 10:47 mark. Passing the ball from behind the midfield stripe,
Sofia Mitchell sent an impressive pass to Benway, who one-touched the ball into the net. Oberlin's final goal of the opening half came when Timm-Blow crossed the ball to the top of the goalbox to meet Garver for the third score of the match.
The Crimson and Gold continued to roll the Comets, tacking on four more goals in the second half. The first came off the foot of Benway after Gilfond connected with the 2x Player of the Year to take a one-on-one shot against the Olivet keeper. Just one minute later,
Sophia Wilson passed to Norah Mosely, who lifted the ball from nearly 30 yards away into the back of the net.
Up 5-0, Oberlin's rookies got involved in the goal celebrations with a score from the top of goal box.
Skylar Leung drove past her defender in the midfield before sending the ball forward for Williams to take into cage. It was Leung's fancy footwork that added to Oberlin's advantage after she pushed the ball past a trio of Comets to meet
Ashlee Hiller for her first goals of the season.
The Yeowomen look to carry this momentum into their next match when they hit the road for an in-state contest against Heidelberg on Wednesday, September 25. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.
