Oberlin, Ohio - The Oberlin College football team led at the intermission but couldn't make it stand up as the visiting Anderson University Ravens blanked the Yeomen in the second half en route to earning a 20-6 victory on Saturday afternoon at the Austin E. Knowlton Athletics Complex.
The Yeomen scored on their first possession of the game but never found paydirt again as the Ravens mustered up just enough offense to secure their first win since November 12, 2022, when they beat Manchester 19-12.
Drew Nye finished 16-of-38 passing for 223 yards and one touchdown. However, he was also sacked eight times and threw two interceptions. Junior
Connor Steele was his top target, hauling in four passes for a career-best 101 yards, including a 59-yard touchdown.
Greg Lane led the ground attack with 29 yards on 12 carries.
Oberlin would march 74 yards on seven plays during its opening possession with Steele corralling a tipped pass and racing 59 yards down the center of the field for a touchdown. After a missed field goal attempt by the Ravens on their first drive, the two foes would trade possessions for the rest of the first quarter with not much happening.
The second quarter started with senior co-captain
Dylan Marshall stepping in front of a Zac Montgomery pass for an interception. It was the first of three giveaways Montgomery gave the Yeomen as he finished just 6-of-13 for 57 yards to go along with those three picks.
After Oberlin was unable to capitalize, sophomore
James Chikwe gave the ball right back to the offense he snagged a deep-ball attempt from Montgomery for his first-career interception.
Oberlin ultimately carried a 6-0 lead into the half but it would be the Ravens who would go out on front on their second possession of the third quarter, taking avantage of a short field to cash in their first touchdown of the season to finish off a 6-play, 41-yard drive. It was 4th-and-5 from the 15-yard line but Montgomery found plenty of room in the middle of the field to race in for the score.
The Yeomen appeared to be on their way to answer the Anderson touchdown but
Josh Woznicki was stripped at the Anderson 15-yard lineup and it was scooped up by Jake Simpson, who initially returned it for a touchdown but it was called back due to an illegal block on the return. However, the Ravens still took advantage of the miscue, executing a clocking-crunching 14-play, 66-yard drive that took 8:18 off the clock as backup QB Caron Brookbank swept the far end for a 4-yard TD to make it a 14-6 lead for the visitors.
After a quick three-and-out by both teams, Oberlin took over with 5:25 left to play in search of a potential game-tying touchdown and two-point conversion. A 4th-and-3 completion to
Nathaniel Castro extended the drive and another 11-yard completion to Steele had the Yeomen just on the outside of the red zone, but Zaire Prioleau would undercut Nye's pass along the near sideline and race 85 yards the opposite way for game-clinching pick-6.
Oberlin finished with a 16-14 edge in first downs and out-gained the Ravens 268-257.
Brandon Hall led Oberlin with 13 tackles, while
Ari Smith finished with 11.
Hunter Green made eight tackles to go along with an interception.
The Yeomen open NCAC play next week at Ohio Wesleyan University with kickoff set for 1 p.m.
