GREENCASTLE, IN- Hitting the road for their conference opener, the Oberlin College women's lacrosse team took on the DePauw Tigers on Saturday afternoon. The Crimson and Gold outscored 3-1 in the fourth quarter resulting in a 13-8 loss for the Yeowomen. Oberlin falls to 4-8 on the season and 0-1 in NCAC action.
Â
Leading the scoring for Oberlin was
Alexis Escobedo and
Lauren Mills, who each tallied two goals.
Olivia Corradi and
Abbie Patchen led the point total with three apiece after the two scored a goal and a pair of assists.
Â
On the defense, Mills brought in a team-high four groundballs, while
Katie McMorris led the team with two caused turnovers. First-year
Phoebe Dolan pulled down four draw controls in the contest.
Â
The Tigers struck first, scoring just 41 seconds into the match. Oberlin responded with a shot on cage by Corradi, but not before the Tigers added to their point total. DePauw extended their lead to 3-1, and looked to carry that into the second quarter, but a turnover on the clear gave Oberlin the scoring opportunity they needed.
Emily Shimabukuro found Patched in the eight to score Oberlin's second goal and bring the Yeowomen within one at the end of the first quarter.
Â
Behind a McMorris caused turnover, the Crimson and Gold tied the game when
Megan Hiller connected with Mills at the 11:20 mark in the second period. The Oberlin defense gave way to a four-goal run from the Tigers, as the Yeowomen sat behind 7-3. With four minutes remaining in the half, Escobedo and McMorris found the back of the net to bring the visitors within two. With less than a minute remaining,
Audrey Koren took a shot at the cage, but unable to connect, the teams headed into the halftime break down 7-5.
Â
DePauw continued their roll into the second half, holding Oberlin scoreless through nearly ten minutes while adding another pair of goals. The Crimson and Gold strung a pair of points together in as many minutes, but it wasn't enough to tie up the game as the score sat at 10-7 ahead of the final period.
Â
Scoring two unanswered goals to start the fourth quarter, DePauw extended their lead to five before Corradi found Mills to end the drought. It was too large a comeback to build with just a couple of minutes remaining, and the Yeowomen fell to the Tigers 13-8.
Â
Oberlin returns home for a midweek matchup with Ohio Wesleyan at home on Wednesday, April 10. The draw is set to go up at 7 p.m.
