Owls Fly Past Yeomen, Ending Tourney Run

By James Foster '26

GRANVILLE, OH – In the semifinals of the North Coast Athletic Conference Tournament, the sixth-seed Oberlin College Men's Tennis Team was blanked by #2 Kenyon College, who is ranked #24 in the nation, one day after beating the #3 DePauw Tigers for the first time in five years.

Playing in high winds at Denison University, the #6 seed Crimson and Gold quickly dropped all three doubles points to the #2 seed Owls. Oberlin's #3 tandem of second-year James Foster and first-year Ben Tichauer were unable to get any momentum going, losing 8-0 to Eliezer Gonzalez and Alejandro Gonzalez. Third-year Sebastien Naginski and second-year Shawn Lisann, Oberlin's top squad, lost multiple crucial deuce points and couldn't recover, falling 8-2 to Paolo Pocasangre and Christophe LeBlanc. Oberlin's #2 team, fourth-year Rohan Gold and first-year Zain Makada, took on Eric Zhang and Rishil Kondapaneni in the final doubles match of Gold's impressive career. The duo fought valiantly but their efforts were futile in an 8-2 loss.

Tichauer and Foster were again outplayed in their singles bouts. Tichauer quickly fell into a 3-0 hole in the first set but broke to get to 3-2. However, he couldn't capitalize on the momentum and won just one more game in his #5 match against Eliezer Gonzalez, losing 6-2, 6-1. Foster couldn't get rolling in his #6 match, losing 6-0, 6-1 to Rakkan Audeh and ending the Yeomen's season. Since Kenyon earned five points, the match was abandoned. In his last match, Gold was down 6-2, 1-0 to Pocasangre and Lisann was in a 6-2, 2-0 hole against Kondapaneni in their #1 and #2 matches, while Naginski trailed 6-2, 3-0 to Kenyon's #3 Alejandro Gonzalez and Makada was behind 6-3, 4-3 to Gianluca Bocanegra in the #4 match.

With their season now finished, the Yeomen are looking forward to next season, where they hope to repeat their successes and improve on their losses.
