Softball Takes Down NCAC Leader in Game Two of Hiram Doubleheader

OBERLIN, OH- After losing nine straight to the Hiram Terriers, the Oberlin College softball team broke the six-year drought and downed the best team in the conference in a 4-2 on Thursday evening. The Crimson and Gold lost the first game of the night's doubleheader, 9-0 after five innings, moving their NCAC record to 2-8 and overall record to 5-21.

GAME ONE | Hiram 9, Oberlin 0 (5 Inn.)
Katie Austin got the ball to start, pitching a full five innings, while giving up seven hits and walking two.

HOW IT HAPPENED
The Oberlin bats struggled after getting at least one on board, going a total of 1-for-4 with runners in scoring position. The Yeowomen last got a runner on base in the fourth inning, when Samantha Pinedo made it 60 feet away from scoring on two outs. Alaina Di Dio and Loren Carter recorded the only other hits for the Yeowomen, but neither were able to round the bases home.

GAME NOTES
» Austins faced 29 Hiram hitters in the game, allowing four ground balls and 11 fly balls.
» Pinedo was the only Obie to steal base in the game.

GAME TWO | Oberlin 4, Hiram 2
The Crimson and Gold took a 2-1 lead in the second inning and never trailed from there on the way to a 4-2 win over the Hiram Terriers in game two.

Earning the start, Hailey Alspach picked up the win for Oberlin while pitching a complete seven innings. The right-hander struck out five while allowing no walks and giving up just five hits.

At the plate, the Yeowomen were paced by Jess Friedman, who went 2-for-3 on the day with two RBIs. Austin compiled a noteworthy effort as well, going 1-for-2 with a double and two RBIs.

HOW IT HAPPENED
After trailing 1-0 in the second inning, Austin doubled down the left field line to bring Pinedo and Alspach around the bases.  Up 2-1, Oberlin extended their lead when Haley Carlson and Mia Brito touched home after Friedman doubled through the right center. The Terriers were unable to gain any momentum against Oberlin's strong defense, and the Yeowomen captured their first victory over Hiram since 2018.

GAME NOTES
» Four players stole bases in the win, including Wren Norris, Brito, Carlson, and Alspach
» The Yeowomen out-hit the Terriers at an 8-5 clip.
» Brito recorded an impressive ten putouts, followed by Norris with six.

The Yeowomen have a short turnaround when they return to the diamond this Saturday, April 27. The Crimson and Gold take the field against Ohio Wesleyan at 3:30 p.m. The second game will follow thereafter.
