Game Recap: Softball |

Oberlin Takes One from Kenyon in Sunday Doubleheader

GAMBIER, OH- Grabbing their second conference victory this season, the Oberlin College softball team defeated Kenyon 2-1 in game one before dropping the second game 8-3. The Sunday split the Crimson and Gold to 2-4 in the NCAC and 4-20 overall.

GAME ONE | Oberlin 2, Kenyon 1
Sophomore Hailey Alspach started in the circle and picked up the win for Oberlin. The right-hander went seven innings, giving up one run on three hits, allowing no walks and striking out five batters.

HOW IT HAPPENED
The Yeowomen got on the scoreboard first behind an RBI single from freshman Wren Norris. Coming from third base, Maya Means scored on the hit giving the Oberlin the 1-0 lead.

After the Owls rallied to tie the ballgame, the Yeowomen came back to retake the lead in the fifth inning. Alspach came across to score for Oberlin, which brought the score to 2-1 in favor of the Yeomen. The score remained 2-1 for the rest of the game as Crimson and Gold held on for the win.

GAME NOTES
» The Yeowomen out-hit the Owls at a 7-3 clip.
» Alspach limited Kenyon to 0-for-5 with runners in scoring position.
» Second-year Kailey Dunham led the Yeowomen at the plate, going 1-for-3 with a double.

GAME TWO | Kenyon 8, Oberlin 3
Senior Katie Austin got the ball to start for Oberlin and pitched through six innings. The right-hander gave up eight runs, one earned, on eight hits, allowing three walks and striking out five.

Mia Brito led the offense with a trio of hits and an RBI to lead the Yeowomen. Alaina Di Dio furnished a noteworthy effort as well, going 2-for-4 with a double. Austin also chipped in for the Oberlin bats, putting together two hits in three trips to the plate.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Trailing 5-0 in the third inning, Means singled to right field before Austin reached base on a throwing error, advancing Means. Continuing to cycle through the bases, Austin moved ahead to second before stealing her way home on another Kenyon error. Although Oberlin left Di Dio and Gina Lombard on base in the top of the second, the Yeowomen had cut into the Owls' lead.

Oberlin closed the gap further in the fourth when Dunham singled through the left side to bring Samantha Pinedo home.

Kenyon built their lead to 8-2 over the next three innings, before the Oberlin offense got back to work, reducing that lead to 8-3 in the seventh. Down to their final out, Brito singled up the middle, scoring Alspach, but the 8-2-6 play ended the rally for the Yeowomen and capped the ballgame.

GAME NOTES
» Brito led the Yeowomen, amassing three base hits in the ballgame.
» The Yeowomen out-hit Kenyon, 12-8.
» Oberlin went 3-for-9 (.333) with runners in scoring position.
