Game Recap: Women's Lacrosse |

Oberlin Dashed by Flying Dutch on the Road

HOLLAND, MI- After a strong opening quarter, the Oberlin College women's lacrosse team was subdued in the second half against the Hope Flying Dutch. In a 20-15 final, the Crimson and Gold came up empty on Saturday afternoon. The Yeowomen move to 3-3 on the season.

Audrey Koren and Abbie Patchen combined for nine points in the road contest, leading the offense with four goals apiece. Emily Shimabukuro also finished with a hat trick, scoring two of her three goals off the free position. Defensively, Caroline Lee and Maddie Weathers had a field day, each forcing two turnovers while Weathers scooped five ground balls.

In goal, Janny McCormick earned the start, playing just shy of 43 minutes and making six saves. Emily Berger made her appearance in the third quarter, amassing three stops in cage.

Oberlin had early momentum after a turnover caused by Alexis Escobedo gave way for Patchen's first goal in the game. The Yeowomen scored again after a massive defensive stop when the Crimson and Gold backline forced a shot clock violation on Hope. The Flying Dutch responded with a pair of their own goals, and the back-and-forth action ensued as both teams looked to take the lead. Tied at 5-5, Koren and Shimabukuro found the back of the net in the final seconds of the quarter to give Oberlin a two-goal cushion.

Hope came out strong in the second half, but the Yeowomen maintained their lead behind a settled offensive effort. With 49 seconds left in the half, Hope capitalized on a man-up opportunity to cut the Yeowomen's lead to one. Shimabukuro took a shot at the buzzer to try and regain to two-goal advantage, but a stop from the Flying Dutch shifted the momentum the way of the home team ahead of the half.

Behind a man-up goal from Megan Hiller and a free position shot from Shimabukuro midway through the third quarter, Oberlin looked to have shaken off the final seconds of the first half. Hardly letting their guard down, the Crimson and Gold gave up a pair of quick goals to Hope, tying the game once again at 11-11. Olivia Corradi notched a man-up goal for Oberlin in response, but the Flying Dutch had found their rhythm and secured their first since the opening quarter at the 4:44 mark.

It was all Hope from then on, tacking on seven six unanswered goals through the third period and into the fourth. Oberlin battled to stay in the game, finally ending the drought with 1:39 to play. A goal from Patchen as followed by a goal from first-year Phoebe Dolan, but it was too little too late for Oberlin, who fell 20-15 to Hope.

The Crimson and Gold play again on Tuesday, March 12 when they head up the highway to take on Baldwin Wallace. The Yeowomen and the Yellow Jackets are set to start at 7 p.m.
