Pomona, CA - The Oberlin College softball team dropped both ends of a doubleheader at Pomona-Pitzer, falling 4-3 in heartbreaking fashion before succumbing to a 5-0 defeat in game two.
Oberlin carried a 3-2 lead into the seventh of game one, but the Sagehens were able to put together some last at-bat magic to get by the Yeowomen. A two-out walk put runners on first and second. Emily Hurtado would then tie it with a single into left field before Claire Sefkow drove in the game-winning run to leave the Yeowomen shell-shocked.
Oberlin played from in front in the early going as senior Aliana Di Dio roped a two-run double into left field in the top of the first inning.
Single tallies in the third and fourth innings from the Sagehens evened the affair but the Yeowomen would retake the lead when
Haley Carlson belted her first-career home run to lead off the sixth inning.
Hailey Alspach (2-6) was the tough-luck loser after tossing 6.2 innings inside the circle.
Carlson had two of the Yeowomen's four hits in the loss.
The bats went silent for Oberlin in the nightcap as the Yeowomen had two hits in the loss.
The Saghens would post a pair of runs in each of the fourth and fifth innings before Marie Milton added a single tally in the sixth with a two-out RBI double to leftfield.
Oberlin's hits came courtesy of
Maya Means and
Roxie Freifeld.
The Yeowomen will conclude their California slate tomorrow at Whittier College. First pitch of the doubleheader is set for 2 p.m. ET.
