Softball Splits on Day Two of Spring Break

La Verne, CA - The Oberlin College softball team split a doubleheader at the University of La Verne on Wednesday night, winning game one 3-2 before falling 11-0 in five innings in the sequel.

Hailey Alspach (2-5) and Kirstin Sanchez were locked up in a pitcher's duel through the front three innings, as it was all zeros across the board until Oberlin pushed a run across in the top part of the fourth inning. After the first two hitters reached base, senior Alaina Di Dio laid down a sacrifice bunt to put a pair of runners into scoring position. It was fellow senior Mia Brito who came through in the clutch with an RBI single back up the box to put the Yeowomen out in front.

Oberlin would grab a 2-0 lead in the sixth on Di Dio's run-scoring single back up the box that allowed Wren Norris to score with the help of a La Verne error as well.

Two hits and an error in the home half of the sixth tied the game at 2-2 but the Yeowomen would not be denied their second win of the year. Kailey Dunham and Haley Carlson led off the inning with back-to-back singles. After a fielder's choice produced the first out, a double steal put the pressure on the Leopards' defense and La Verne catcher Alyssa Campbell would airmail her throw into left field that allowed Carlson to score the go-ahead run.

Alspach would then sit down the Leopards in order in the bottom of the seventh to finish off the victory.

Oberlin doubled up La Verne in hits, 8-4, with Norris going 2-for-3 with a double and a run scored. Di Dio also had two hits in the triumph.

Unfortunately, La Verne would get its revenge in the nightcap scoring nine runs over the first three innings and never looking back.

First-year Samantha Pinedo had two hits in the loss.

Oberlin is idle tomorrow but will continue its West Coast swing on Friday at Pomona-Pitzer. First pitch of game one is set for 3 p.m. ET.
