Game Recap: Women's Lacrosse |

Late Rally Comes Up Empty for Oberlin

ASEWANEE, TN- On the second leg of their spring break trip, the Oberlin College women's lacrosse team took on the Sewanee Tigers on Wednesday night. Battling to the final second, the Crimson and Gold lost a close 12-11 contest. With the loss, Oberlin falls to 4-6 on the season.

With a team-high five goals, Abbie Patchen led the offense, while Megan Hiller chimed in with a trio of goals and an assist. First-year Elle Lavin recorded her first career point with an assist in the game, while Lauren Mills and Larissa Andrick also added a pair of points each.

On the defense, Olivia Corradi scooped four ground balls in addition to a caused turnover and a goal. Maddie Weathers, Phoebe Dolan, and Mills also brought in two ground balls each.

After Sewanee got on the board first, Andrick found Mills to even the score early in the first quarter. The Tigers tacked on four more goals before Dolan forced a turnover on the home to give Oberlin a chance at ending their drought. Put on the line after being fouled, Patched cut the Sewanee lead to three after scoring on the free position. Less than a minute later, Hiller notched her first goal of the game in the same fashion.

After Patchen scored again, the Yeowomen stormed back into the game, down by one with 1:29 remaining in the first quarter. In the final seconds, Andrick completed the comeback for Oberlin off a pass from Hiller to set the score at 5-5. Oberlin carried over the momentum into the second period behind a Patchen goal to take their first lead of the game. The pace slowed in the second period, as the Yeowomen held the Tigers scoreless for nearly the entirety of the quarter. In the last 22 seconds, Sewanee punched in a goal off a free position opportunity to tie the game at 6-6 at halftime.

Oberlin and Sewanee continued to go tit-for-tat as the third quarter got underway. The Crimson and Gold finally broke loose behind a pair of goals from Patchen and Corradi to take a two-goal advantage over the Tigers.

Sewanee responded to tie the game for the fourth time, but it was Patchen again who opened the final period with a score for the Yeowomen. The drama continued into the final minute, as the game was tied at 11-11 with just minutes remaining. At the 1:47 mark, the Yeowomen committed a foul that earned them a yellow card, forcing the team to play man-down for the remainder of the game. Sewanee capitalized on the late foul, taking the 12-11 that clinched the loss for Oberlin.

Oberlin has a quick turnaround and will play their final game of their spring break trip tomorrow, Thursday, March 28, against Rhodes College at 3 p.m.
