Maryville, TN - The Oberlin College baseball team finished on the wrong end of an 8-5 scoreline on Wednesday night at Maryville College.
The Yeomen produced just five hits in the setback, with rookies
Kyle Baxt and
Grayson Black joining
Ethan Hurwitz with those with extra-base hits. Baxt extended his hitting streak to 17 games with a three-run home run in the bottom of the eighth, but the Yeomen didn't have enough firepower to get past the Scots.
Sophomore southpaw
Liam Rose (1-2) pitched five innings, allowing seven runs (six earned) on seven hits, two walks, and two strikeouts.
A five-run second inning by the Scots proved to be the difference in the end as they pounded three doubles in the frame and took advantage of two walks as well.
Oberlin would get on the board in the top of the third, trimming the deficit down to three on Hurwitz's two-out, two-run double that plated
Joe Strabley and
Brady Groves to give Hurwitz RBIs 19 and 20 on the season.
Single tallies from the Scots in the third, fifth, and sixth innings put the Yeomen in a big hole until Baxt delivered a jolt of life into the team with one swing of the bat in the eighth. However, it was too little, too late to impact the final outcome, as the Yeomen were sat down in order in the ninth.
Maryville starter Tommy Musuras (1-1) picked up his first win of the year, tossing the front five innings and surrendering just two runs on four hits and a walk. After Oberlin didn't have much success against a pair of middle relievers, Xavier Resto came in to slam the door in the ninth by striking out the side.
The loss dropped the Yeomen back to 9-8 on the year, while Maryville leveled its mark at an even 10-10.
Oberlin will look for revenge tomorrow afternoon when it concludes its two-game series against the Scots at 2 p.m.
