Maryville, TN - Oberlin College first-year
Calvin Burkholder threw a complete-game masterpiece as the Yeomen defeated the Scots of Maryville College, 2-0, to close out their spring break trip in a tidy 2:12.
Burkholder was simply sensational throughout the nine-inning affair, throwing 73 strikes on 123 pitches while scattering eight hits - all of which were singles. The rookie right-hander from Aurora, Colorado, struck out two and walked two. He faced 34 batters and recorded 13 flyball outs and nine ground ball outs, including two double plays.
Scots' starter Nic Mirabella matched Burkholder through the front four innings, keeping the Yeomen off the board but would depart in the fifth after recording just one out. Singles from
Sean Livingstone and
Joe Strabley put runners on the corners and chased Mirabella from the game. Reliever Kyle Timko was promptly greeted by
Harry Kaplan, who poked an RBI single to left field, but that would be all the Yeomen would get as they left the bases loaded.
The only other run of the game would come in the sixth inning as
David Curtin raced home on a wild pitch.
With the lead in hand, Burkholder would sit down the Scots in order in the sixth and work around a one-out walk in the seventh. Maryville put two aboard with one out in the eighth, but Burkholder induced a groundout and pop-up to get out of the jam unscathed. He would give up a two-out single in the ninth but would get AJ Finco to bounce into a game-ending fielder's choice to rubber stamp the victory.
Oberlin had just six hits in the game, two of which came courtesy of Kaplan.
Brady Groves and Curtin joined Strabley and Livingstone with one hit as well.
The Yeomen head back north to start conference play on Saturday at the College of Wooster. First pitch of the twinbill is set for noon.
