Softball Drops a Pair to Open Spring Break

Claremont, CA—The Oberlin College softball team opened spring break by losing both ends of a doubleheader to Claremont Mudd Scripts. The Yeowomen fell 8-0 in five innings and lost 10-0 in five innings in the nightcap.

Oberlin mustered just three hits in the lid-lifter, courtesy of Loren Carter, Alaina Di Dio, and Kailey Dunham's double.

The Athenas got two in first off of Sarah Loper's two-RBI double to the gap and right center. CMS would then use three hits, two Oberlin errors, and a walk to break the game wide open with a four-run third inning.

Sophomore starter Hailey Alspach departed the game after just 2.2 innings, allowing five runs, but just two were earned. The Escondido, California, native issued a season-high three walks and surrendered four hits. Senior Katie Austin didn't fare any better, getting roughed up for seven hits and three runs (two earned).

CMS first-year Giselle Lai had two hits, two walks, and three RBIs, including the game-ending two-run single back up the middle that evoked the mercy rule.

Five Oberlin errors loomed large in game two, resulting in only four of the Athenas' 10 runs being earned.

Carter had the Yeowomen's lone hit of the game, running her hitting streak to nine games. The junior from Bloomington, Indiana, has had a hit in 10 of the team's 11 games this season.

Oberlin will be back in action tomorrow at the University of La Verne. First pitch of the twin bill is set for 3 p.m. PT / 6:00 p.m ET.
