Oberlin Ohio - The Oberlin College women's basketball team used a big first half en route to earning a 62-46 victory over the visiting Hiram College Terriers on Saturday afternoon at Philips Gymnasium.
Junior
Camille Zinaich led the way with 14 points to accompany her seven rebounds, four steals, three blocks, and two assists. The senior backcourt duo of
Alyson Jefferson and
Gina Lombard each netted 12 points and combined for seven assists. The Yeowomen also got strong contributions up front from
Krystal Montas and
Katherine Csiszar as they corralled 15 boards and had seven assists as a duo. Montas also racked up six of Oberlin's 10 blocked shots.
It was all Oberlin from the onset as the Yeowomen started the game with an 8-0 spurt that forced an early Hiram timeout with six of those tallies coming courtesy of Zinaich. A finish inside from Montas gave Oberlin its first double-digit lead of the game at 16-6 at the 4:34 mark of the opening quarter. An Anastasia Lawler 3-pointer on the Terriers ensuing possession shrunk the deficit down to seven, but the Terriers were shutout the rest of the way as the Yeowomen led 24-9 after 10 minutes of play.
The Yeowomen would continue to pester the Terriers, ballooning their lead to 30-11 on a
Lily Najmulski triple-hit with 8:37 left in the half. Oberlin led by as many as 25 and eventually carried a 44-21 lead into the intermission.
With a more than comfortable cushion in hand, the Yeowomen would take their foot off the gas in the second half, scoring just 18 points over the final 20 minutes of play. Thankfully, the margin was too large for the Terriers to overcome despite working their way back to within 10, 56-46, with 2:33 left to play. However, an old-school 3-point play from Zinaich and a long-range strike from corner by
Ellie Pollock-Ballard were enough to seal victory for Oberlin.
The win ran Oberlin's record to 14-7 overall and leveled its conference mark at 5-5. OC is also now 6-2 on its home floor this season. Hiram fell back to 8-13 and 3-7 in league play.
After shooting a blistering 68 percent (17-of-25) in the first half, Oberlin was just 6-of-25 (24%) in the second half en route to finishing at 46 percent (23-of-50) for the game. Hiram deposited only 13 of the 63 shots it hoisted for a 20.6 percent clip, which is the second lowest percentage of any Oberlin opponent this season.
The Yeowomen will look for their third straight victory on Wednesday evening at Wooster. Tip-time is set for 5:30 p.m.
