Yeomen Fall to Tartans in First Match of the Spring

PITTSBURGH, PA - The Oberlin men's tennis team started its season with a trip to Pittsburgh to take on the #22 Carnegie Mellon Tartans, suffering a 9-0 defeat.

The Crimson and Gold got off to a slow start in doubles and were never able to recover. Second-year Shawn Lisann and third-year Sebastien Naginski took on Raghav Jangbahadur and Daniel Kong, the Terriers' top doubles team, and lost 8-2. First-year David Mnuskin and second-year James Foster competed in the third slot and fell 8-3 to Nicholas Wernink and Theodore Gershon. First-year Zain Makada, playing in his first match as a Yeomen, partnered with fourth-year Rohan Gold and fought valiantly before falling, 8-6. Makada's powerful forehand and deft touch won two clutch points to break serve for 6-7, but the pressure from Akshay Joshi and Derek Wong proved to be too much in the end.

The high-powered Tartans proved their mettle in singles play as well. In the No. 1 slot. Gold was never able to fully get his footing against Jangbahadur and lost 6-2, 6-0. Kong's aggression and consistency proved to be too much for Lisann, who lost 6-1, 6-0 in the second flight.

Naginski faired a bit better at No. 3 singles, but wasn't able to handle the offensive onslaught of Wernink and lost 6-2, 6-3. First-year Ben Tichauer competed well in the fourth position and won some impressively long rallies. In the end, he was overwhelmed by William Wang and lost 6-3, 6-1.

Makada carried over the momentum from a close and highly competitive doubles match to his singles debut against Joshi. However, the experienced Tartan was able to weather the storm and earned a hard-fought 6-4, 6-1 win. Mnuskin was beaten quickly by Chaitanya Irkar, who won the No. 6 singles match with a pair of breadsticks, 6-1, 6-1.

Despite the 9-0 loss, coach Eric Ishida remained optimistic and was pleased with the team's mentality.

"It was a good start to the season," Ishida said. "We competed well with full team effort and it was great to play an outside match in February."

Next weekend, the team will have two chances to rebound from the loss. They will host the Walsh Cavaliers on Saturday at 2:00 p.m. and the Kalamazoo Hornets at 9:30 a.m. on Sunday.
