OBERLIN, OH- On a chilly Wednesday night in Knowlton, the Oberlin College women's lacrosse team dropped a 13-11 battle with Otterbein. After being shut out through the opening quarter, Oberlin put seven goals away in the third, but it was too little too late for the Crimson and Gold as they drop to an even 2-2 on the season.
Â
Leading the attack,
Abbie Patchen tacked on four points, including a team-high three goals.
Audrey Koren also finished with multiple goals at two. Six other Yeowomen got in on the scoring action, with Patchen, Koren, and
Katie McMorris each tallying an assist. Defensively,
Emily Shimabukuro brought in five ground balls to compliment a pair of caused turnovers.
Kaela Wilson dominated the draw, bringing in six draw controls for the Crimson and Gold.
Â
Janny McCormick and
Emily Berger split time in cage, combining for ten saves at five apiece.
Â
Nothing seemed to go Oberlin's way in the first quarter, as the team recorded just one shot while conceding four goals in the first 15 minutes.
Megan Hiller took the Yeowomen's only aim at net, but came up empty after the Otterbein keeper made the save. Down 4-0 after the opening quarter, the Crimson and Gold's woes continued in the second period, culminating in a 7-0 deficit at the 5:58 mark.
Â
On the back of Patchen, Oberlin finally put themselves on the board and ended the Cardinals' onslaught. The play at the end of the half seemed to pick up behind a plethora of shots from the attack, but Maggie Nance of Otterbein came up clutch with saves in response. Oberlin braced for a long second half, down 7-1.
Â
At the 10:20 mark, Oberlin luck seemed to shift, a goal form Koren lifted the Yeowomen's spirits and gave way to a 6-1 run for the Crimson and Gold. Patchen scored first before Shimabukuro capitalized on Oberlin's man-up opportunity. McMorris got her first score of the season, capped off with a rookie goal from
Phoebe Dolan.
Â
With renewed momentum heading into the final quarter, Oberlin's 11-8 deficit seemed feasible to summit. McMorris to
Maya Blevins cut the Cardinals' lead to two, but the visitors responded to maintain their three-goal advantage. With a quick shot off the fastbreak,
Lauren Mills brought Oberlin back within striking distance at 12-10. Fighting right to the end with a goal from
Alexis Escobedo at :26, Oberlin's comeback attempt ultimately came up empty, dropping the match 13-11.
Â
The Crimson and Gold look to bounce back from this loss on Saturday, March 2 when they travel to Meadville, PA to take on their old foe, Allegheny. The Yeowomen and the Gators are set to begin at 1 p.m.
