Yeomen Soar Over the Cardinals

Oberlin, Ohio - The Oberlin College men's tennis team earned a commanding 7-2 victory over the visiting Otterbein University Cardinals on Wednesday evening.

The Yeomen carried a 2-1 advantage into singles play after coming out victorious in the top two doubles flights. The lead tandem of Shawn Lisann and Sebastien Naginski easily dispatched Max Fickas and Neil Reddy, 8-2, while Rohan Gold and Zain Makada doubled-up Joshua Mammen and Jake Chilcote in the second flight, 8-4. The Yeomen nearly pulled off the sweep, but the Otterbein pair of Dylan Shook and Will Newberry were able to sneak by the Oberlin grouping of James Foster and David Mnuskin 8-7 (7-5).

Oberlin went relatively unchallenged in the middle portion of the singles lineup but the top two flights along with No. 6 singles needed a full three sets to determine a winner.

Makada made short work of Reddy at No. 4, knocking off the Otterbein rookie with matching 6-2 victories in each set. Naginski took care of Chilcote in the third position, 6-4, 6-1, en route to securing his third victory of the season.

Ben Tichauer picked up a win by the retirement of Newberry at No. 5. The Yeomen freshman won the first set 6-2 and was up 3-0 in the second when Newberry was no longer able to continue.

Lisann notched his second win in a row at the second position. After falling 3-6 to Mammen in the opening set, the Vienna, Virgina, native regrouped to win the following two stanzas (6-2, 6-1) while surrendering just three games.

Gold delivered a 6-0 bagel to Fickas in the first set but the Cardinals ace would go swing-for-swing with his Oberlin counterpart the rest of the way. Fickas would force a decisive third set with a 7-5 victory in the second set, however, Gold would flip that script in third, winning by the same scoreline to notch his 26th career singles victory.

The No. 6 singles battle featured a bag of breadsticks. Otterbein rookie Nikita Kitaev took down James Foster 6-1 in the first and Foster would rebuttal with a 6-1 win of his own in the second. However, Kitaev returned to form and authored another 6-1 win over Foster in the third.

The triumph marked the second straight for the Yeomen as they leveled their dual-match mark to 3-3 on the year.

Oberlin is back in action on Sunday afternoon, facing another Ohio Athletic Conference foe as the team will travel west to Ada, Ohio, for a 2 p.m. clash against the Polar Bears of Ohio Northern University.
