Oberlin, Ohio - The Oberlin College men's lacrosse team earned an 11-6 win over the visiting Trine University Thunder on Saturday afternoon at the Austin E. Knowlton Athletics Complex.
Senior
Ryan Blasberg led the Oberlin attack with three goals while
Sam Ryu,
Christian Tacogue, and
Jacob Starcke each posted a pair in the win.
However, it was the Yeomen defense that flustered the Thunder throughout the afternoon as they turned it over 27 times which led to a 39-16 ground ball advantage for the Yeomen.
Blasberg ripped off a goal 13 seconds into the game and minutes later it was rookie
Lewis Moore who cashed in his first-career goal to stake Oberlin to early 2-0 lead. However, a pair of Aiden Theobald finishes had the score level at 2-2 after one quarter of action.
Oberlin would grab control of the game, scoring the first three goals of the second quarter, taking advantage of a three-minute non-releasable penalty to start the session. Roo put the Yeomen out in front for good with the help of a Blasberg feed. Blasberg and Starcke would follow with scores but it was the Thunder's Mitchell Voglewede who cashed in the final goal of the frame. However, the Yeomen still carried a 6-3 cushion into the intermission.
Back-to-back Tacogue tallies increased the margin out to five but Theobald would strike again to make it a four-goal game heading into the fourth quarter.
In the final period, Tacogue would find Ryu for his second score of the game and the two foes would essentially swap scores the rest of the way as the Thunder never threatened the eventual outcome.
Solomon Brennan would cash in a
Reese Ackerman pass for his fourth score of the season, while Blasberg finished off his hat-trick performance with just under six minutes to go to run his season account to a team-high seven goals.
Oberlin finished with a 44-17 shot advantage, which included a 22-12 differential in shots on goal. OC also claimed 11 of the game's 18 face-offs and went 16-of-18 on clear attempts, while limiting Trine to just 19 clears on 26 attempts.
The Yeomen (2-0) will look for their third straight win to start the season on Wednesday afternoon as they make the long trek to Hope College for a 4 p.m. matinee.
