Granville, Ohio - The Oberlin College women's basketball team capped off the regular season with a 76-64 defeat at Denison University on Saturday afternoon.
Senior
Alyson Jefferson led the way with 21 points, while first-year
Krystal Montas netted a career-high 15 points on an efficient 5-of-8 shooting. In just her third game back from injury,
Angela Kumler also netted eight points.
Both teams got off to a slow start offensively as a Montas layup gave Oberlin a 6-3 edge after just six-and-a-half minutes of action. After the Yeowomen ultimately finished the opening frame up 13-11, the pace picked up in the second quarter. The Big Red would briefly go out front by one, but back-to-back triple-hits from Montas made it 24-19 at the 6:01 mark.
Oberlin would maintain its lead for the rest of half, but Denison managed to stay within striking distance as the Yeowomen took a 34-29 advantage into the intermission.
The Big Red came out hot following the restart, grabbing a 37-34 lead with an 8-0 run over the first three minutes of the third quarter. The Yeowomen would answer back with an 8-0 response run of their own that featured five points from Montas. A traditional 3-point play from
Ellie Pollock-Ballard gave Oberlin a 47-41 lead with 2:13 to go but the Yeowomen would go cold the rest of the way as the Big Red scored the final eight points of the frame to build a 49-47 cushion with 10 minutes left to play.
The Denison momentum would carry over into the fourth quarter as a three-ball from Abby Cooch swelled the Big Red lead out to 55-47 at the 8:38 mark. The 14-0 Dension barrage from the end of the third into the early portion of the fourth was finally halted by a
Camille Zinaich jumper but Denison would answer back with an 11-0 burst that left no doubt in the eventual outcome.
The final result wasn't necessarily indicative of how the bulk of the game went as the contest featured 11 lead changes and three ties along the way. However, Oberlin struggled to slow down the threesome of Ada Taute (22) Abigail Westmeyer (20), and Cooch (17) combined to score 59 of the team's 76 points.
The Big Red swept the regular-season series against the Yeowomen, but Oberlin will have its opportunity for revenge on Tuesday night in the NCAC Quarterfinals as the Big Red have secured the number four seed and will host Oberlin once again as the conference's five seed. Tip-time is set for 7:30 p.m.
