Oberlin Knocked out by Denison in NCAC Quarterfinals

GRANVILLE, OH- In the NCAC Tournament Quarterfinals, the Oberlin College women's basketball team was ousted by fourth-seed Denison, 75-60. Oberlin finishes their season at 16-10 overall and has a 7-7 record in conference play.

With a career-high 27 points, Alyson Jefferson led the Yeowomen on offense, followed by Camille Zinaich, who also finished in double-digits with 13 points. The senior added four rebounds and three assists, while Zinaich led the rebounding efforts with nine. Fellow fourth-year Gina Lombard paced the attack outside the arch, hitting a pair of treys for eight points and a team-high four assists.

After missing her first shot, Jefferson put Oberlin on the board with a jumper to get the game going. The senior guard scored six of the following ten points for the Yeowomen, including a pair of free throws to give Oberlin a 14-12 lead. Denison's Abby Cooch scored on back-to-back possessions for the Big Red, helping the home team reclaim their lead. It was a shot at the buzzer from Zinaich that tied the game for the seventh time in the opening period.

It was all Denison to start the second quarter, led by Abigail Westmeyer, with nine-straight Big Red points. A layup out a timeout by Zinaich ended the scoring drought for Oberlin, but Westmeyer responded right away to extend Denison's lead to 25-18. A free throw from Krystal Montas brought the Crimson and Gold within two of the lead, but that was the closest Oberlin would come to striking as Denison capped the half on a 19-7 run. The Yeowomen struggled from the field, hitting only 4-11 while being outscored 28-14.

Down 44-30 to start the half, Oberlin's woes picked up where they left off. The offense was unable to produce, until the 5:20 mark when Angela Kumler hit both her shots from the charity stripe. The Yeowomen continued to look for a spark in their attack, but it wasn't until the final minutes of action did Oberlin pick up the pace, scoring six points capped by a last-minute bucket from Lombard.

Hoping to build off their momentum in the waning seconds of the third period, Lombard knocked down her first trey of the day, just ahead of back-to-back baskets from Jefferson and Zinaich. With six minutes remaining, Anora Lee found Jefferson for a fast-break layup that started after Montas pulled in a defensive rebound. The Big Red responded with a layup of their own, but Lombard caught fire with another triple, assisted by Kumler. Just as Oberlin seemed to be picking up steam, the Big Red extinguished the momentum with a 6-1 run, capped with a three-pointer. The momentum shift was enough for Denison to ride out the final minute of the game, as Oberlin fell to the Big Red 75-60.
