Oberlin, Ohio – Becoming just the 11th player in program history to surpass the 1,000-point mark,
Camille Zinaich of the Oberlin College women's basketball team guided the Yeowomen to victory on Saturday afternoon. After their 73-61 trouncing of Kalamazoo, the Crimson and Gold move to 6-3 (1-0) overall.
On her way to history, Zinaich scored 20 for Oberlin, going a perfect 8-8 at the charity stripe.
Krystal Montas lit up the Hornets with 21 points, ten rebounds, two blocks, and three steals. This performance marks her second career double-double and first of the season. With 13 points,
Lily Najmulski led the team with six assists and added six rebounds to the winning effort.
Oberlin found themselves down 6-0 to start the game, but Zinaich tipped in a shot from
Ellie Pollock-Ballard to put the Crimson and Gold on the board. The Yeowomen struggled to keep pace with Kalamazoo, but a 7-2 run in the final minutes brought them within five at the end of the period.
Najmulski stayed busy to start the second quarter, stretching for a pair of layups to bring the score to 21-15. Katherine Csiszar and Angela Kumler got in on the scoring action, but the Yeowomen still found themselves down 28-22 at the halftime break.
Oberlin's come-from-behind efforts finally paid off at 2:05 when Gabby Peña-Hilzen and Najmulski drilled back-to-back three-pointers to give the Crimson and Gold their first lead of the afternoon. The Yeomen's defense held Kalamazoo to just 3-of-12 from the field while converting 9-12 from the free-throw line to finish the third quarter on top, 43-39.
Csiszar immediately picked up the momentum, making good moves to splash a jumper in the team's first possession. The third-year forward added another pair of free throws to keep the Yeomen ahead of the Hornets.
Up 69-60 with just 22 seconds left in the game, Zinaich stepped up to the free-throw line, needing to hit both shots to claim the 1,000-point crown. Hitting nothing but net for each, the senior cemented her name in Oberlin's history, becoming the first 1,000-point scorer since Olivia Canning in 2019.
"I couldn't have done it without the support of my team and coaches," Zinaich adds, "[I] was just happy to pull out a win with them."
Head Coach Stephany Dunmyer says of her high-scoring senior, "Huge congrats and shout-out to Camille for reaching the 1,000-point milestone! From the moment she stepped on campus, Camille has been an incredible impact player who makes everyone around her better. This achievement is a testament to her hard work, dedication, and commitment to our program!"
Oberlin held off the Hornets over the final seconds of the match to secure the 73-61 win at home and notch their fourth-straight victory. Facing a 24-hour turnaround, Zinaich and Co. return to the court tomorrow, Sunday, December 8, to host Muskingum. The non-conference foes are set to tip off at 3 p.m.
