Oberlin Opens Season with Gritty Victory

Adrian, Michigan – Tipping off their season, the Oberlin College women's basketball team defeated the Adrian Bulldogs 63-60 on Friday night.
 
Ellie Pollock-Ballard was a key player for the Crimson and Gold, leading in field goals made with six and 3-pointers with three, for a total of 15 points. Angela Kumler showcased her defensive skills by leading the team with four steals and added five assists. Krystal Montas also contributed to the stellar defense with two blocks and eoight rebounds, while scoring eight points. Camille Zinaich was efficient from the free-throw line, making all 12 attempts, resulting in a team-high 18 points.
 
The first quarter between Oberlin and Adrian ended in a 10-10 tie. The Bulldogs started strong with Morgan Babb's layup, assisted by Kaitlyn Otto, giving them an early lead. Oberlin responded with a 3-pointer from Pollock-Ballard, who scored five consecutive points, lifting the Yeowomen to a 8-2 lead. Zinaich contributed defensively for Oberlin, securing several rebounds and blocks, while the Bulldogs' Aubrie Ickes scored crucial points late in the quarter to level the score. Turnovers were frequent for both teams, with Oberlin committing nine and Adrian five.
 
Oberlin took an early lead in the second quarter behind a jumper from Taylor Sanchez. Pollock-Ballard then extended the advantage with a 3-pointer, assisted by Anora Lee, at 7:30. However, the Bulldogs' Kylie Skidmore responded with a layup and two free throws, narrowing the gap. Montas from Oberlin scored consecutive layups, pushing the visitor's lead to 19-16. The quarter concluded with a fast-paced exchange of points, including a fastbreak layup by Lily Najmulski of Oberlin, tying the game at 25, before Kylie Skidmore secured Adrian's lead with a layup, ending the quarter at 27-25 in favor of Adrian.
 
Equalizing the game at the start ofthe second half, Zinaich nailed a jumper, assisted by Najmulski. Adrian's Ashlyn Weatherly responded with a layup to give her team a lead. Significant defensive efforts were noted as both teams combined for numerous steals, with Oberlin recording eight and Adrian five. Kumler of Oberlin was instrumental in the latter part of the quarter, notching several steals and contributing to Oberlin's scoring, including a crucial 3-pointer that put Oberlin ahead 40-37. Morgan Babb from Adrian helped keep the game competitive with a late jumper, bringing the score to 42-44 in favor of Adrian, before the quarter concluded with a tie.
 
Zinaich continued her momentum into the final period of play with a layup to bring the score to 47-44. A sequence of free throws by Zinaich and Lee allowed Oberlin to tie and eventually take the lead. Adrian experienced a series of turnovers, which Oberlin capitalized on by adding points through Zinaich's consistent free-throw shooting. Montas contributed significantly, with a layup at the 56-52 mark, and later, with two free throws to maintain Oberlin's lead. Despite Adrian's efforts, including timely baskets from Kaitlyn Otto and Morgan Babb, Oberlin secured the victory with late free throws from Kumler, closing the quarter with a 63-60 win.
 
Oberlin takes the court again when they travel down the road to take on #19 Baldwin Wallace on Tuesday, November 12. The midweek matchup is set to begin at 7 p.m.
