Berea, Ohio – Traveling to take on the top team in the region, the Oberlin College women's basketball team fell to No. 19 Baldwin Wallace on Tuesday night. The cross-town matchup saw the Crimson and Gold on the wrong end of a 63-48 score, evening the Yeowomen's record to 1-1.
Angela Kumler stood out for the Crimson and Gold with a strong performance, scoring ten points while also securing seven rebounds and three steals.
Anora Lee contributed defensively with a pair steals, while
Katherine Csiszar provided balanced support, scoring six points and matching Kumler's rebounding total with seven.
Oberlin looked strong in the first minutes of action, holding BW scoreless through nearly three minutes of play. Giving the Crimson and Gold the first lead of the game, Kumler drilled a fast-break jumper at the 9:30 mark. Oberlin maintained their lead with another layup from Kumler, but the Yellow Jackets eventually caught fire with two key 3-pointers to take a 15-10 lead by the end of the quarter.
The second quarter was all Yellow Jackets; outscoring Oberlin 21-6, the home team took a commanding lead into halftime behind a trio of three-pointers and a slew of Crimson and Gold miscues.
Coming out of the half, the Yeowomen looked refreshed, starting strong with
Lily Najmulski scoring a layup at 9:20 and Kumler following up with a jumper to close the gap. BW responded with Bella Vaillant's layup at 7:25, maintaining their lead. Najmulski hit another trey, but despite Oberlin's efforts, Baldwin Wallace managed to keep their strong lead at 49-34 heading into the final period of play.
A balanced final quarter between the two foes did little much to help Oberlin's close the gap, but the Yeowomen saw a handful of bright spots beginning with a three-pointer from
Krystal Montas at 6:12. Minutes later, first-year Gaby Pena rebounded a failed three-pointer by the Yellow Jackets, turning the defensive play into a pair of points off a layup from
Kendal McCall.
While too late to complete the comeback, Oberlin finished the night on a strong note, scoring the final five points. Lee grabbed the first two before her steal led to free throw opportunities for
Taylor Sanchez. Thereafter, Lee hit a jumper in the final minute, capitalizing off a pass from McCall.
The Yeowomen take flight for their next pair of games, when they head to Atlanta, Georgia for the Emory Classic on Saturday, November 16. Playing a pair of games in the peach state, Oberlin first takes on the Olgethorpe Petrels at 3 p.m. on Saturday.
