Oberlin, Ohio – In a nail-biting showdown at Austin E. Knowlton Complex, the Oberlin College football team edged out the Hiram Terriers 20-17 in their season finale. Fueled by resilience and key plays on both sides of the ball, the Yeomen delivered an unforgettable victory to honor their graduating class on senior day.
The Crimson and Gold struck first, late in the opening quarter. Quarterback
Drew Nye connected with wide receiver
Massimo Vliet on a spectacular 29-yard touchdown pass, capping a short but decisive drive after a Terrier turnover. Nye doubled down in the second quarter, breaking free for a 23-yard rushing touchdown, putting Oberlin up 14-0. Oberlin's QB1 finished the day with 197 passing yards, completing 18 of 31 attempts, and contributed significantly on the ground with 72 rushing yards.
Hiram clawed back in the second quarter, as Jaden Jennings found Dylan Hargas for a 2-yard touchdown pass to cut the lead. Michael Myers added a 19-yard field goal for Hiram just before halftime, narrowing the score to 14-10. In a monumental moment, Oberlin's
Jacob Day nailed a 27-yard field goal as time expired in the first half, marking his first FG in Crimson and Gold.
Up 17-10 coming into the third quarter, Oberlin's defense battled through a strong Terrier attack, but Hiram running back RJ Johnson made an impressive move into the endzone for a seven-yard touchdown. Stiffled through the rest of the quarter, Oberlin took a 17-17 tie into the final period of action.
Oberlin's defense proved critical down the stretch, with
Hunter Green leading the charge. Green tallied 13 tackles, 3 tackles for loss, and an impressive 2.5 sacks, wreaking havoc on Hiram's backfield. Linebacker
Brandon Hall added two fumble recoveries, keeping the Terriers caged.
The game's decisive moment came in the fourth quarter when Day split the uprights with a clutch 19-yard field goal, following a clock-eating, 19-play drive that took 10:56. Banking on a hail-mary to win the game, Hiram launched the ball into the endzone, looking for any remaining luck they had. Stretching out to preserve the lead and clinch the win for the Yeomen,
James Chikwe intercepted the ball in a see of blue and white to seal the win. Guiding the Crimson and Gold's defense in the closing minutes,
Dane Mentore and
Lance Slone stepped up to earn the win.

John Pont, remarks on the victory, "I am so happy for our team to see all their hard work come to fruition." Pont adds, "This game was a great way to send off the seniors of team 134! It was an all-around team effort and a special win for Oberlin football."
