Volleyball Bows Out of NCAC Tournament

Greencastle, IN - The sixth-seeded Oberlin College volleyball team fell in straight sets to third-seed DePauw Tuesday night in the quarterfinal round of the North Coast Athletic Conference Tournament.

Oberlin put forth a valiant effort in the opening set before being outlasted 26-24. The Tigers would then carry that momentum the rest of the way, earning 25-15 and 25-17 set victories to move on to the semifinals.

Senior Cami Sweet led the way in her final match with 12 kills, while classmate Natalie Dufour matched junior Zeynep Kaya with five kills each. Julia Hall, who completes Oberlin's senior trio, led with 16 digs.

The Yeowomen came out of the gates hot, opening up an 11-7 lead on a Sweet send-down. However, the Tigers responded, scoring six of the next eight points to level the affair at 13-13. Oberlin later trailed 23-20 but another finish from Sweet and service ace by Josie Macdonald cut the deficit down to one. Just moments afterwards Oberlin was facing set point but a DePauw service error and an ace from first-year Evelyn Welton extended the battle momentarily but two straight Tiger points gave them the win.

The Yeowomen rebuttal started by ripping off five straight points to start the second session. Unfortunately, the Tigers would settle in, orchestrating a 6-1 run to take control of the frame at 11-8. Oberlin would get back within two, 12-10, on a Dufour kill but the Tigers proceeded to answer with five straight points to leave little doubt in the eventual outcome.

After a brief 2-0 lead to start the third set, Oberlin found itself in a 15-12 hole at the midway point of the stanza. Unfortunately, the Tigers' advantage would only balloon from there as they went on to finish off the match.

Oberlin ends the season under first-year head coach Jasmine Brown at 5-20 and 2-5 in the NCAC.
