Tennis Splits Pair of Home Matches

Oberlin, Ohio – Hosting both Findlay and Allegheny, the Oberlin College men's tennis team split the day, falling to the DII Oilers 6-1 before clinching a tight 4-3 victory over the Gators.

In doubles against Findlay, the team of Brady Huggett and Shawn Lisann battled hard in the top slot, but ultimately lost 4-6. At No. 2, Enrique Margain and Max Brose also faced a closely contested match, falling 5-7 to their Oiler counterparts. The No. 3 pairing of Oliver Faranda and Zain Makada contributed to the effort but lost 6-3.

Moving on to singles play, Oberlin continued to show determination. Margain fought through a challenging opponent at No. 1, eventually losing 2-6, 6-1, 1-6. Lisann managed to rally and take a set at No. 2, but ultimately fell slot 0-6, 6-1, 1-6.

Makada also fell short in his singles match, dropping 6-3, 6-3 in the No. 3 slot. Ben Tichauer put up a strong effort at No. 4, forcing the match to three sets, ending in a hard-fought loss at 2-6, 6-2, 0-1.

Faranda grabbed the lone point for Oberlin, showcasing his talent with a commanding 6-0, 6-1 win at No. 6.

Taking on Allegheny later in the day, the Yeomen came out swinging, capturing the No. 1 doubles match 6-4 behind an impressive performance from Lisann and Huggett. Rookie duo Margain and Brose sealed the doubles point for Oberlin after taking down Olivier Erkens and David Rodriguez 7(7)-6(1) in the second slot. Oliver Knijnenburg and Makada paired up in the final doubles slot but couldn't secure the insurance victory and fell 6-4.

Up 1-0, Oberlin Lisann grabbed the Yeomen's second point of the day after defeating David Rodriguez 6-2, 6-1. Tichaeur conceded the Yeomen's first point in a 6-3, 6-1 loss in the No. 4 singles match. The Gators' top singles player, Anton Hedlund, tied up the match for his team, taking down Oberlin's Margain 6-3, 6-4.

Faranda put Oberlin back on top with a 6-4, 7(7)-6(5) victory over Wil Jarvie in the No. 6 singles, but Allegheny responded right away with a win over Zain Makada, 6-4, 4-6, 6-3, in the third slot.

Coming down to the final match, Brose grabbed the first set, 6-4, over Olivier Erkens. Dropping the second set 7-5, the first-year from New York responded in stunning fashion with a 6-2 victory to grab the final set and seal the match for the Yeomen.

Oberlin looks to keep the momentum rolling into their final match of the fall season next Sunday, October 13, when they travel to Pittsburgh, PA, to take on Washinton College.
