Oberlin, Ohio – Celebrating their two seniors and bringing awareness to breast cancer in their final home game of the season, the Oberlin College field hockey team dropped a crushing match to Wooster on Saturday afternoon. Falling to the Fighting Scots 2-1 in penalty strokes, the Yeowomen sink to 0-11 on the season and 0-7 in NCAC action.
Bella Tilford guided the offense is a well-balanced attack, taking a trio of shots and scoring the lone penalty goal. Three other Obies recorded shots in the match, led by senior
Izzy Clauss-Ehlers with the only shot on goal.
Mary Rodman and
Elly Scheer added the other two takes.
In cage for the Yeowomen,
Janny McCormick shutout the Fighting Scots for a complete 60 minutes, plus 20 minutes of overtime gameplay. The backline of Scheer,
Meaghan Kramer, and
Johana Horvath held Wooster to just seven total shots in the match.
Oberlin came out quickly after honoring
Marina Matkovsky and Clauss-Ehlers, earning a penalty corner just 1:20 into the game. Sending a shot wide, Tilford broke open the offense for the Yeowomen. Settling in on defense thereafter, the Crimson and Gold's next chance on cage came at the end of the half when Rodman took a well-placed shot close to cage that was blocked by the Fighting Scots.
Both teams scoreless coming out of the break, a huge save by McCormick kept Wooster a bay just 30 seconds into the half. Capitalizing on a quick transition upfield, Clauss-Ehlers stuck the ball into the near corner to threaten the score. Wooster's keeper managed to get their foot out for the stop, as the two conference foes traded quick shots on goal.
Oberlin really got their offense rolling in the final quarter of regulation, earning five penalty corners in the last 15 minutes. Tilford and Scheer accounted for the team's three shots in that span, all blocked by the visiting competition.
Heading into overtime, neither team were able to settle the ball on their offensive half until the second period of extra time. The only shot of overtime came three minutes into 2OT when Wooster's Teagan Fullen tried to score off a tight angle for McCormick to make the easy save.
Needing penalty strokes to decide a winner, Tilford's double-dodge gave Oberlin the early 1-0 lead. Conceding the following shot, McCormick responded with great defense on the third take to stay tied. Wooster's Audrey McKenna put the game away for the visitors in the fourth attempt to spoil Oberlin's senior day celebration.
The Crimson and Gold will take a well-deserved week off over the Fall Break, before resetting for a road match again Wittenberg on Saturday, October 26.The Yeowomen and Tigers are set to begin at 12 p.m.
