Westerville, Ohio – In a difficult non-conference matchup on the road, the Oberlin College volleyball team dropped a 3-0 match to the Otterbein Cardinals. The Yeowomen drop to 4-13 and 1-3 in NCAC action.
Cami Sweet and
Josie Macdonald led the Crimson and Gold on the attack, combining for nine kills while Sweet added an ace and a solo block.
Evelyn Welton tallied a pair of aces in the match, while
Julia Hall, Sweet, and Macdonald added one each. In the assist department,
Jillian Jendsen led the team with eight, splitting the duties with
Genna Gauthier (5) and
Iris Archibald (1).
Defensively, Archibald pulled out a team-high 11 digs, closely followed by Macdonald and Jendesn with six each.
Natalie Dufour, Hall, and Sweet all made one solo block one each, with Dufour and Hall splitting another block.
Early in the opening set, the Yeowomen battled with the Cardinals, but were unable to keep up with the OAC leaders as Otterbein stormed ahead to a 17-9 lead. Fighting back, Dufour and Hall jumped up for a block just before Macdonald scored a point forth Crimson and Gold. The momentum was short-lived however, as the Cardinals took the first set 25-15.
The second set also saw a pair of run by the Cardinals to stretch their lead to 15-6. A slew of errors by the Cardinals helped Oberlin but the lead to five, but Otterbein was full steam ahead to take the second set, 25-15.
Conceding ten-straight points to start the third set, Oberlin struggled to get back within striking distance of the home team. The Crimson and Gold came as close at 14-6 behind a kill from Sweet, but never got any closer as they dropped the final set 25-14 for the 3-0 loss.
Oberlin stays in central Ohio for their next contest when they return to conference action to take on the Denison Big Red. The Yeowomen and the Big Red are set for a 7 p.m. next Wednesday, October 23.
