GAMBIER, OH – Scoring 28 points out of halftime, the Oberlin College women's basketball team's fiery offense soared the Crimson and Gold past the Owls on Wednesday night. A combined 33 points from Alyson Jefferson and Camille Zinaich paced Oberlin to a 69-38 win over Kenyon, as the Yeowomen improve to a 4-5 in conference record and 13-7 overall.
The Crimson and Gold return to the court this Saturday, February 3 for a home battle against Hiram. The Terriers and the Yeowomen tip off at 2 p.m.
Oberlin had three players score in double figures, led by Jefferson, with 17 points and three steals. Zinaich added a double-double with 16 points and ten rebounds, while Anora Lee helped out with ten points from the bench.
The Oberlin defense held Kenyon shooters to just 25 percent from the field, including 17.4 percent from three-point range. The Yeowomen also kept Alyssa Gest to 1-of-12 shooting and two points in the game.
How It Happened
After falling behind 5-4, Oberlin went on a 7-0 run with 4:38 left in the first quarter, culminating in a bucket from Zinaich, to take an 11-5 lead. The Yeowomen then lost some of that lead, but still entered the quarter break with an 11-7 advantage. Oberlin did most of its first quarter damage in the paint, scoring 10 of its 11 points close to the basket.
Oberlin kept its first quarter lead intact before going on an 11-0 run starting at the 8:36 mark in the second period, highlighted by a bucket from Zinaich, to increase its lead to 22-10. The Owls cut into that lead, but the Yeowomen still enjoyed a 25-17 advantage heading into halftime. Oberlin ran the fast break well, scoring four fast break points.
Following intermission, Oberlin continued to expand its advantage, pushing it to 42-24 before going on an 11-0 run, punctuated by a three from Gina Lombard, to expand its lead further to 53-24 with 36 seconds to go in the third. Before the conclusion of the third period, the Owls had cut into that lead somewhat, but the Crimson and Gold still entered the fourth quarter with a 53-26 edge. Oberlin's bench made the most of its minutes in the period, as non-starters totaled seven of the team's 28 third-quarter points.
Oberlin kept its lead intact before going on a 6-0 run, finished off by Taylor Sanchez's jumper, to grow the lead to 69-36 with 1:00 to go in the contest. Kenyon narrowed the margin somewhat before the game was over, but Oberlin still cruised the rest of the way for the 69-38 win. Oberlin took advantage of its opportunities in the post, scoring 10 of its 16 points in the paint.
